BASKETBALL CLUB FORMED It is now definite that Bowmanville will have an entryl In the Intermediate Ontario Basketball piaydowns, which~ begin late next month. Play-off dates and opponents will be decîded by the governing body at a meeting in Hamilton en the l8th of January. Practices and selection of ail-star players trom the local Town League began Monday sa preparations wili have al- ready been started as this goes to press. Such local stai- warts as Tom Pearson, Danny Seto, Ken Kelly, Don Weish, Norm Buwalda and John Fowler, are among the players, expected ta turn out and make the team a success. The coach bas informed us that na position on the gquad with the exception of Dan Seto bas been decided yet. A poil of players bas agreed that the likeable Mr. Seto tg the most exciting basketball player seen around this town for a rnighty long time. This team wilI be self-supporting and gym rentais and travelling expenses will al he footed by the players them- selves. Fortunately, one ai the local teams tg purchasing a new set of uriformns for !ts teain and through the geaerosity of the Coronation Cafe these will be made available ta the1 Ail-Star team when selected. It bas been many a year since basketball was one of the major sports in town. How many readers can recali that B.H.S. fought its way into the Ontario High School finals, against such large scbools as North Bay Collegiate and Stamford of Niagara in the basketball hey-day of Boyd *Siemon, Tony Mcllveen, Gien Mcllveen, Walter Goode, Bob en.Ail this and no classification because of school size ln those days! We can remember watching the Rotary Winged Wheel- ers of the Don Mason, Ross Gilbert, "Didge" Rundiee cm, ably coached by Wait Degeer - but that was way back when this scribe was just starting ta play basketball - and that's a whiie back now. Ail sport fans are requested ta buy a ticket and support tbis effort ta put Bowmanvilie on the map in another sport- Ing activity. Many scoffed when Oshawa Grey Gaels re- vedlacrosse la the City of Oshawa but not when they M: won a Canadian championshlp la their initial year. An On-i tario championship ln basketball's first year here tg flot a n Impossibility. Buy a ticket and give it ta a student if you stili want ta be a sports booster, but aren't a particular bs 'kelibalI fan, a- Editor's Note .- We are indebted ta Lew Wiseman %vho has spent considerable time compiiing the above Informa- tion for this week's Statesman. Admission wili be charged for the games and it is hopedý that a good crowd will be on hand. But Sunday It happened. and last place Kitchener Rangers came up with their biggest scoring outburst of the season ta hand the Generals iass number one of '64. The win drew Kitchener ta within a single game a! Hamilton, each with three games ihand over Oshawa. However, the Generals stil] enjoy a nie point bulge in their battle ta retain sîxth place, not iacludiag iast night's *gamne here wlth Kitchener. Oshawa appears on TV Sunday afternoon against Toronto Marîboros - then another "big" four-pointer next Tuesday whea Hamilton visits Memorial *Arena. The old scribe hasn't had much opportunity to visli Southview this wlnter, but thanks ta the Goodyear Leagu( we had a chance ta throw a few rocks Friday evening, enè while there holy mackerei! Counilior Paul Chant skipped bis rink ta a rermarkablE third end that saw seven stones counting. Don't know whal the record is at Southview, but this was the best we'VE heard of. Glad our rink didn't provide the opposition. Other members of the foursome were: - an Tucker Joan Davey and Bll Joli. f j ? BASEBALL MEETING -'MONDAY Brr - its cold!
