ITe Canadian 9tatevman, BowmanvilIe. Nov. 18. 1964 GENERALS DROP TWO STRAIGHT Just when it appeared Oshawa Generals were on their way after taking a pair of weekend encounters from Mont- real to move into the league lead, a week ago, the picture, changed this week. Generais were held to a 4-4 tie by St. Catharines here [ast Tuesday, then after losing only once, dropped two straight. bowing to Peterboroughi Petes Thurs- day and Kitchener Rangers, Sunday afternoon. The loss in Peterborough was flot entirely unexpected. Petes, rated in pre-season forecasts as the team to beat, had posted the only previous victory over Oshawa and are tougli' et home. However, Generals had lost by only one goal,i without scoring ace, Ron Buchanan. This time "Buckv"* wasý back as the Petes romped to a 7-1 decision. At Kitchener, Rangers, after upsetting Niagara Fallsa week earlier, turned the trick this time 5-3. For some strange reason Generals always seem to have trouble nt the Kitchener' auditorium, which incidentally, is a smaller replica of Maple1 Leaf Gardens. This was one team which didn't appear to be much of a problem, particularly after Oshawa's 11-1 conquesi tI the first meeting this season. Following the 5-5 tie between FlYers and Mariborog,! Sunday, at the Gardens, if our mathemnaties is correct, Toronto1 is three points up on Oshawa and Niagara Falls, both dead- locked for second place. Now after their drive to ihe top. Generals hav e droppedl! two in a row. collecting only a single point in their [agt! three games. The return of Buchanan was supposed to, straîghten out the forward [mnes, but just xvhen he w&ast finally getting untracked. a knee in.îury last Tuesday night side-lined Jim Booth. Fortunatcly Bill White and Darryl Leach have returned to the line-up. If coach Jim Cherry leaves Chris Hayes oni the third line, along witli Booth and White, il promises to be a pretty effective unit. Left-wing on the Wayne Cashman - Danny O'Shea line poses the big problem. wliere Jim Blair doesn't possess the speed to do the job. Manager Wren Blair has been looking for n left-winger,, and it wouldn't be surprising to see Ricky Gay brought ip, from the Whitby Dunlops. Rick only recently joined the lJr.1 "B" club, atter the football season ended. A major disappointment has been the play or Bill Little.' The speedy winger came up with this great five goal per-ý formance in Toronto and was reallv flying in the next three or four outings, but since then hasnt heen delivering the, way lie can. But the real problem Iatel 'y has bernii he plaY of theý defence. Chris Roberts, after a great stant, bas slumped badly, while 16-year-old rookie Armand Giroux. injured in: Peterboroughi, showed great promise but hnin'î played well Ihe l[ast five games. The samne holds trîte for Nick Beverley,' which has put a great load on Bobby Orr. Orr, enjoying a fine season, lias been leading the attack as the club's top point-man. but when Bobby rushes, he needs that strong defensive defenceman to back him rip. His de-ý tractors claimn he spends too much time on the attaikwt the result the defensive work suffers. But wîthout Orrn goals and assists, Generals wouldn't be in second place -- and just counit the shots he blocks and plays broken rip if you don't think Bobby is a fine defence player. This would be a good time to shake the slump. Generals played Niagara Falls [ast niglit here and pay a return visit to the Falls, Friday niglit. NexI Tuesday Peterborough makes their first local visit, and these are must games if Oshawa1 ls to stay up in the standings. t. t t AN N.H.L.
