WestSide (FROM PAGE ONE) Caine Mutiny Court Martial jand Mrs. Coverly allowed their jexuberant cast much freedom Of movement and the crowd scenes, such as Bernardo's deatb and Anita's tauinting. were extremely well executed. A very touching scene was the mock weddîng of Maria and Tony. The stage of the Bowman- ville Town Hall presents the performers wîth many prob- lems not the Ieast of wbich is Iack of backstage space. With nowhere to store additîonal props or sets,~ it was remark- able how well changes of set- tmng were indicated by the merest suggestion of a door- way. Andrea Ewert dîd a nias- terful job of designing a set which was, both visually at- tractive and utîlitarian. Cos- tumes by Tessie Brown were successful because we had no difflculty distinguishing the Jets and their girls from the Sharks and their girls. 1With a cast as large as the one in West Side Story, it is almost impossible to single out each performer. Outstand- ing ln a totally successful cast wvere lovely Tina Vooys as Maria, and Terry Russell as Tony. Both have good stage presence and strong voices [whether singing individually or in duet. Jet leader Rick Mdr- rison and Shark leader Dennis Deeley 'provided spirited act- ion and we felt that each was, indeed, the leader of his men, As Bernardo's girl, Anita, Cindy Ayre, provided one of her strongest portrayals. She sang well, and performed wîth great style. Lillian Lavender, as Anybody's, was delightfui as were Patrice Eyman and Lynda Eyman as Rosalie and Consuelo. The latter girls greatly heightened the'comedy in "America". Dennîs Francis was a lively Action, and par- ticularly good iiibis number Both dîrectors deserve the thanks and appreciation of the community for providing such an enjoyable evening, and al- thougb most of us knew ia ad- vance the sad ending, we were nonetheless toucbed wben Trony dies -and leaves the grieving Maria to unite the two warring gangs, As a delightful' addition to the evening, the Bowmaaville High School Band played a few aumbers prior to the open- in curtain. Mr. Tremeer bas obviously worked long and 'productive hours with this large group of students and it is tô his credit tbat there is s0 succssful a band. il Page, Toronto, weue visitais law, Mr. and Mus.- Aylw,*i with Mus.
