6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 17, 1976 SALEM The Salem branch of St. Paul's U.C.W. met in the church on Tuesday, March the 9th at 8 p.m. The meeting was opened by Mrs. Kay Stevens taking the devotional entitled "Tihe Lamps of Motherhood". The theme, was the impor- tance of motherhood in every stage of a child's life, from chîIdhood to teens to marriage and on into grandmotherhood. How mnothers can be an influence for good in a caring physical way, and also in spiritual ways, through pre- cept and example. The theme was in three parts with Mrs. June Marchant and Mrs., Pearl Craiîg, taking the alter- nating parts'. Candies were lit to show each succeeding phase. Kay closed the devo- tional with prayer and- then introduced our guest speaker, Mrs. Phyllis McRobbie. Mrs. McRobbie sho*ied us slides taken on three trips to the Caribbean islands. The Bahamas, Jamaica and Puer- to Rico. She told us abo 't the size and history of each ýsland as she went along and the slides were excellent. It was almost like seeing it our- selves. She also had slides of a boat trip through the Ontario lakes and canais, enjoyed by she and Mr. McRobbie and Kay and AI Steven last summer. A warm vote of thanks and applause followed. Unit leader Mrs. Ruby Shackleton chaired the busi- ness part of, the meeting. Minutes of the last meeting were given by Mrs. Audrey Shirk, and approved. Coming U.C.W. affairs announced, among them the date of the next general meeting in St. Paul's, April the __2th. A delicious lunch was senved by the group in charge and a social houn enjoyed. Helen May spent a few çays last week with her parents, Lewis and Margaret Wood during hier recuperation fnom recent surgery.,Better health from now on, Helen! Since learning of our neigh- bour, Charlie Elliott's involve- ment with the Law of the Sea Conference, we watched with keen interest one morning last, week as a representative of the British Cod Fishing In- dustry was interviewed on C.F.T.O. T.V. This interview pointed out the disastrous effects on the British economy which will result if an agree- ment is flot reached, immedi- ately between British fisher- men and the government of Icelanid. Violent action has already been taken. by the Icelanders. The whole inter- view with its seriousthoughts forced me to neflect on an earlier discussion, that I had, heard, between a newsman and a British Parliamentanian who with great intensity urged ail of the free world to joh4 together against the common enemy who is purposefully wokigonsch sMallion- is on Thursday monnings at nine o'clock on Channel 9 when Pat Murray has, as his regulan guest,' a Consumer Affairs nepresentative who comments on the weekly groceny, and food specials which are advertised byý the large- chain stores. Surely every homemaker would do well to tune in to see if the so-called bargains are neally just that. Feeling istless.? Out of sorts? Fight Hit Take a walk.
