Wood Minor Poewees hosted Ajax as their guests for Young Canada Day in what proved ta be a wide open contest. Eleven goals hit the scoresheet but unfortunately aur boys' only accountod for five as they lost this close one ta the Ajax squad. Only 33 seconds had elapsed when Ajax took advantage of a goalmouth scramble ta notch their first goal. Eight minutes inter, Doryk Clark put a move on the Ajax netminder ta start the Taras' scaring. Assisting on this goal were linemates Scott Heard and Danny Weir. Ajax then closed off the first period ta go ahead 2-1. The first five minutes of the second frame saw aur Taras explode for three goals, Scott Masters from Mike Hamel and Raymond Cummings, Danny Weir from Scott Heard and Mike Hamel fram Kelly Matthews. This two goal lead was not enaugh ta contain the opposition as Ajax closed off the second period scoring and openod the third with another ta tie up the cantest. Midway, inta the period, Mike Hamel put his team in front once again, assisted by Raymond Cummings which endod the Taras' scoring. Unfortunately for the Taras, Ajax had not put thoir scoring f0 an end as they netted two more markers to emerge the winners, six goals ta five. The Taras' net duties were shared by Donnie Hayes and George Kennett. t was la fine effort from bath clubs pro- viding great entertainment for ail. The three star awards went ta Danny Weir and Mike Hamel of the Taras and Kevin MacDonald from Ajax. Lose Tournament Opener On Saturday, January 14, following their Young Canada Day Contest, the H.L. Wood Club travelled to Cobourg ta participate in the Cabourg Church Hockey League Minor Peewee Tournament. Their first game provec i dsappoint- ing as the entire teamn came up flat against an alert Milton team. The club fromn Milton took advantage of Taras mistakes and at games end skated away with a 4-0 victory ta go on ta the championship round. This marked the Toro's second loss in four hours. Bomb Napanee 10-3 Just three hours after'their Milton loss the Taras took ta the ice once again ta meet Napanee in the first round of consolation. The first period was a cautiaus one with aur boys çarrying the play ta their opponents. At the end of this periodthe Taras were on top 2-1 on goals by Scott Heard and Chris Michelson. Assîsts went ta Kelly Matthews 'and Raymond Cummings. The second period was al Bowmanville as they out- scored their apponents 5-1 to go ahead 7 ta 2. Taras' marksmen were Mike Hamel with two, Scott Heard, Andy Smith and Raymond Cum- mings with one each. Assists went ta Deryk Clark, Scott Masters, Doug Brown and Chuck Nash. The third frame was no different from the second as aur boys seemed ta be making up for their earlier lasses. At 6:37 Scott Masters clicked an a nice goal, assisted by Mike Hamel and Raymond Cum- mings. Napanee then tallied only ta have the Taras came back with a pair. These came off 'the sticks of Kelly Matthews and Gordie Rogers. Assisting on Gordie's goal were Andy Smith and Chuck Nash. Kelly's marker was a fine unassisted effort. The, final score was 10 ta 3 for the Buils and George Konnett provided excellent goaltending. Consolation Final Against L.N.H.L. Red Wings Just one hour after the Napanee win the Toro's hit the ice again ta mark their fourth game in 9 hours. This final match was the big one and aur oppanents were the L.N.H.L. Red Wings from Oshawa. In two meetings this season the Wings have taken three points from us which tagether with the fact they had played one less game and had three hours rest. Put aur boys in the underdag position. Oshawa scored early in the first period ta go ahead. Early in the second frame Scott Masters tied it up on a nice passing play from. Mike Harnel and Raymond Cum- mings. Just two minutes later the Wings went ahead again but wîth 1: 38 remaining in the second, Mike Hamel evened it up, assisted by Scott Masters. With one period lef t and energy at a minimum the roof fell in as the Wings tallied twice in six minutes ta pull ahead. With 4:50 remaining, Scott Hoard put his team back in contention, with assists ta Danny Weir and Deryk Clark. This lifted.the Taras but just 38 seconds later a penalty was assessed against the Taras. Time was short and sa were the bulls but despito this Scott Masters and Mike Hamel worked hard ta get the puck ta Raymond Cummings who netted the equalizer. ,With overtime in sight and 15 exhausted hockey players, tension was at a peak and with just six seconds on the dlock, Scott Heard on a tremendous rush blasted the rubber into the Oshawa net. Assisting on this game winner was Scott Masters. The goaltending was shared by Donnie Hayes and George Kennett who bath came, up with the big ones when they were needed. In spito of' that, the Engles overcamo a twa-goal deficit in the first period and wont on ta win the game 7-3, affer scoring four unanswered goals in the third. Eagies' play could ho described at a horse race, gotfing ouf of the gate slowly and caming on in the back stretch ta win going away af the wire. The important win gives the Eagles almost a strangle hold on first place in the beague. Eaglos employed twa benches for the game, one handled by Coach Bihl Cosburn and the other by the penalty timekeeper who needed a swinging gate on the sin bin. Engles' penalties for the mast part were earned while Clippers fouis went unnoticed by the rookie referee. The Bowmanville squad toan man played a strong game for this final longue game wifh the Cippers on their home ice, affer two previaus losses there, proving they can ndapt f0 the smaller ice surface in stouffville. Steve Baker, back in the lineup, had a big three goal effort. Rick Richards, the latest addition ta the Engles' netminding duties, was in good form, roflecting the fine goaltending coaching he must have had aiong the way. He pînys the angles superbiy, has a quick glave hand, goos down and up like a jack-in-the-box and has the knack of smother- ing rebounds. Clipp ers started the game strongiy which has been their pattern ngainst Engles scoring a power play de- flection by Owen Heise, time 5:51 into the first period, assisted- by Doug Taylor. Clippers went up by two on a jamn in by Andy Leitch assisted by Steve Schell and Ted Assinck, time 7:12. Engles Started ta carry the play with two minutes romain- ing in the period. Rick Marshman holding themn off the score board with fine saves. Engles' Ted Ptîk who has had a few problems scaring lately, came up with the important first goal for Engfles at 2:33 info the second period, cashing in on a perfect backhand passout by Gary Cox. Ted Puk's second goal of the game came when ho was set in, the clear by a centre pass from Gary Cox, Puk breaking down ice with Marshman backing in, leaving the corners expased which Puk hit perfectly almost the identical spot ta Johnston's goal, time 3:26. Steve Baker's third goal of the night and the final counter coming at the 7:18 mark, assisted by Kim Rasmussen and Don Farrow. Clippers triple threat Perry Brown assessed a double minor at the mid point of the period, lef t their power play defused althaugh they had numerous oppartunities in the penalty filled final haîf of the period. Defeat Uxbridge 6-2 On Sunday night, Part Darlington Marifiýa and Hotel Junior C's hosted the improv- ing Uxbridge Dominion Auto. Engles winning by n 6 ta 2 score.. Engles operated in second gear most of the game and seemed ta be still caught up in their big win over Stouffville the previaus night. Uxbridge with no way ta go but up checked tennciously most of the game while Engles played a relafively baose game giving goaler Rick Richards a busy time including a breakaway, coming up with the save. Engles started the scoring at the 11: 18 mark of the first period Gary Cox deflecting a low point drive by Chris Dwver with Ted Puk also assisting. Dan Strike, playing at centre, cannecfed a passout by Gary Dusseidarp. Nick Van Seggelen started the play, time 15:32. Larry Pilkey big gun of the Uxbridge crew scored at the 19:39 mark assisted by Mike Barton. Kim Rasmussen recorded his first goal of the season a blueline drive, assisted by Steve Baker. Kim took the puck home ta frame it in gald. Uxbridge started third period scoring, a siapper by Kelly Lee, assists ta 'Grog Rutherford and Mike Mnye. Engles decided toanpply a little offensive pressure and were rewarded with their goal, Ted Puk scoring from John Conboy on a hard wrist shot time 12:37.
