The game w as very fast with the Toros oqutsbooting the opposition 9-3. SChris Beck scored the only goal witb Michael Houston assisting. In the next game the Toros were defeated 1-0 by Oshawa Black Hawks. The local boys out-played the opposition but were unable to score, out- shootîng the Oshawa Club 10-3. The only scoring came in the third period on a penalty shot by Mich~ael Cole. On February 19, 1978 thE Toros travelled to Port HopE Von DykTioie to play a strong game out- shooting them 25-3. Brad Carnegie opened the scoring witb assists to Glen Campbell and Chris Beck. Shortly after Carnegie scored is second goalwith Chris Beck getting another assist. Lose Firat Two Playoffs The D&R Sports Minor Atom Toros opened their best of five playoffs in Bay Ridges on Tuesday, February 21, and ialthough they dominated most of the game they dropped a 3-2 decision to their hosts. 1 There was no scoring in the first period but Toros bad some excellent scoring chances including onewbere winger Paul Herron on a set-up from Mark Hickey, fired the puck over the net witb the goalie down and out of the play. The second period saw Bay Ridges mount some offence of their own but tbey couldn't beat goalie Mike Knight despite some fine opportunit- ies. Toros opened the scoring at the 20 second mark as Kelly Balson stick bandled bis way past two Ridges' defencemen and blasted a shot past the Bay Ridges goaltender. Assist on the play went to Greg Martin. No more scoring was done for the rest of the period. The thîrd period started out wi th Bay Ridges scoring at the one minute mark to tie the score. Bowmanville regained their lead at the seven minute mark when Kelly Balson again worked the puck by two defenders and beat the goal- tender with a good individual effort. Toros continued to press for the insurance goal but luck was not with them. Bay Ridges put it aIl together in the last seven minutes of the game and scored two unanswered goals to make the score 3-2, their last goal scored at the 13 minute mark. Toros pulled the goalie for the final minute,,and a haîf but could not get the equalizer. Tough luck fellas but keep trying. Bay Ridges takes 2-0 lead over D&R Minor Atoms D&R Sports Minor Atoms face playof f elimination on Tuesday, February 28, as a 299RDEAN result of a 3-0 loss to Bay Ridges on Saturday, February 25 at Bowmanville alone with their 3-2 loss the previous Tuesday at Bay Ridges. Saturday's gamne saw Toros scoring drought continue as they continually missed good scoring opportunities or Bay Ridges' goaltending thwarted their offensive efforts tbroughout the game. The first haîf of the game was scoreless but Bay Ridges fînally broke the ice when they scored at the five minute mark of the second period. At tbis point both teams picked up the tempo of the game but no more goals were scored until the two minute mark of the third period when Bay Ridges defenceman Kevin Dupont completed an end to end rush with a igh shot to the upper corner which eluded Toros' goalie Kennie Cameron to make the score 2-0. D&R Toros fought gamely to try' and get back in the game but Bay Ridges' defence just rose to the occasion and shut out, Toros and tbey added the insurance goal with only 45 seconds lef t in the game. These two games proved to be very frustrating to our boys. Although they played well they just seemed to be outlucked. The fourth game in Lindsay Friday night saw the Eagles up for the game winning il to 1 while Muskîes operated like a fiat tire beîng outshot 65 to 24. Gary Cox bad five goals, accurate Ted Puk tbree assists on passing excellence, John Conboy two goals, one assist, Brian Simpson two goals. Dan Strike three assists, Gary Dusseldorp one goal, one assist, Steve Baker one goal, Don Farrow ,one. assist, Gary Nemiisz one assist and Kim Rasmussen one assist. Real playoff excitement is happening around the league, the sixth place finishers Port Hope Panthers eliminated the third place Port Perry Flamingos, an upset to say the least. Port Hope came on strong the last two weeks of regular league play carried into the playoffs witb some fine hockey backed up by the sensational goaltending of Jeff Gilmer to knock off Port Perry. Coach George Cawkers team who last year finished first were eliminated in the first round enough to send a coach to the funny farm came back this year struggling to make, the playoffs, then putting it together at the right time. In the other quarter final series between Cobourg Cougars and Stouffville Clippers, Clippers won out in the final game, coach Vern McGregor and bis Cougars almost pulled off another upset.
