Box Djecline in Residential Construction Construction of residential Sdwellings declined last year for the first timne in the four-year history: of. the Durham Region. "In 1977, the residential sector comprised nearly 70 per cent of the total: value of construction as compared to 81 per cent for 1976", a report from the Durham planning and development department said last month. According to the. figures released by the region, permits for residential con- struction valued 1:at $131 million were issued in 1977. In 1976 there were permnits given to about $165 millioni worth of residential building projects. A total of 4,091 new dwelling units were given permits last year and if ail of these units were occupied, they would hold a population :of about 11,000. Considering ail types of commercial, industrial, agri- cultural, residential and insti- tutional building activity, 1977 saw an overaîl decline la, construction activity. The regional figures show that permits were issued last. year for building l projects valued at $188 million. This is eight per cent lower than 1976 when building projects worth approximately $204 million were granted permits. 0f the eight area municipal- ities la the Durham Region, the Town of Newcastle ranked fifth in building activity. The value of construction approved here during 1977 totalled about $11 million. Oshawa led aill area munici- palities in buildingý activity with construction :projects valued at $62 million. Picker- inig was la second place with $55 million, followed by Whitby and Ajax. The award sponsored jointly by the Ontari.o Furni- tur Maufaturrs'Associa- tion' (O.F.M.A,) and theý Ontario Ministry of, Industry and Tourism is givený to manufacturers to recopgnîze achievement în, design, pro- duction and marketing of Ontario-made furnîture. The furniture was judged by professionals in the industry thus giving the consumer confidence in the overaîl quality of the product. Serving as juré!rs were Mildred Istona of Chatelaine; Doug Young, Cherney Brothers, Peterborough, Ont., Frank Goldoni, Capri Furni- ture, Chatham, Ont., JG. Kortleve, Simpso!n-Sears; Tom Gladney, Eaton's; Kelly Bates, Interior Designers of Ontario, R.D. Creelman, Creelman International. There were mutiple winners of the eleven Trillium Awards given this year. Gibbards Furniture Shops Ltd. was a double wilnner with their entries of the ýSomerset Collection in European Traditional Bedroom class and Weilington Collection for European Traditional Dining Room furniture.
