The higher altitude reached by the Soviet intellect, the less room there is, for religion in the consciousness of the people... " This neatly packaged piece of communist propaganda was intended to dlaim for al time the victory of the communist over -the Christian, of the aetheist over the believer of the scientist over the theolgian. The conflict between science and religion has existed ever since man sought to understand and control nature. We are told that when Galileo supported the Copernican view of the solar system, the religious authorities threatened to burn him at the stake. He re- canted but we are told' thati when he had finished he uttered under his breath, "but the earth does move." When Charles Darwin published his "Origin of the Species" in 1859 enunciating the theory of evolution he was immediately denounced by the religious people of the day. One churchman Bishop Wilberforce said, "The principle of natural selection is absolutely imcompatable with the Word of God since evolution was an attempt to dethrone God. Today the relation- shi between science an drelig ion is viewed in its proper perspective. While it is true that sometimes scientific dîscovery does disprove some long hl concepts, that does not mean that one is trying to displace the other. As Christians we must neyer be afraid of dis- carding facts and formula that are relics of history. We must be willing to allow our faith to be seen and expres- sed in the new thought forms of our day. Dr. Werner von Braun, the father of modern space technology said, the two most powerful forces shaping our civilization today are science and ~ttEr ~peaka tx~ ?L?2U~rEub 1~ter 3rnu~ 7he Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, May 3, 1978 7 our- time 'and mankind hearts and minds of waits for it. Science has modern people the spirit made the body, now we that will employ, the must give it a soul. We miracles of science in a must seek to instil in the useful and creative way. religion. Through science man strives to learn of the mysteries of creation. Through religion he seeks to know his creator." The mysteries of nature can only be explained and exploited by study, exploration and diligent use of the intelligence that God has given to us. The real confliet is not with the disproving of God but with the growing gap between morals and knowledge. It is one thing to split the atom. It is another to know what to do with it. As man 's knowledgeof the universe expands it is imperative that our moral and spiritual values expand as well. Heinrich Heine, the German poet, described a gifted sculptor who set out to make a man. He went to his studio, assembled the material and began his work. He fashioned a body, a magn ificant body, and placed it on a finely formed head. When he had almost completed it, the sculptured figure spoke to him, "Master give me a soul. " The artist was so frightened that he ran out the door and down the street. But the creature followed him sayi ng,- "Master, give me a 'soul. You have made for me a magnificent body, now give me a soul."
