Dr. Hubbard said his mother had found the boy strangling, pinned under a chest of drawers in his bedroom March 25. He said the boy, whose mother was in another room at the time, had apparently climbed on to the chest of drawers toppling it over on to him. On February 14, he had been taken to the local hospital for treatment of gastroenteritis. Nurses noticed a bite mark on his left calf and bruises near the soles of his feet. An investigation by a public nurse revealed the bite marks had been made by a three- year-old child in the same home. Dr. Hubbard said that following a visit to the child's home and discussions with the child's father he concluded nothing could have prevented the death. Things Moved "When we got there, things had been moved and we had to accept the explanation of the parents," he said. "The story is not 100 per cent certain, but we're as sure as we can be." Meanwhile, Gary Brookes was fired Tuesday as director of Durham County's child- abuse committee for making public allegations that a local child may have been the victim of child abuse and saying there is a lack of communication between the local Children's Aid Society and the public health depart- ment. Brookes, 29, was suspended following a speech he made about the incident to the local chapter of the Registered Nurses' Association of Ontario and newspaper reports of his allegations. He said he was told he had been fired for insubordination. He added that he was not surprised at the committee's decision and said: "What I tried to do is bring up particular cases of mis- management where the system failed to respond to the needs of the abused child.
