The Merrymakers Bowling League held their'closing banquet and presentation of awards, on Wednesday, May l7th at Centennial Hall on Queen Street. This team won top honors. Frank's SOI11Looking -go As '78 Softball Saeson The Lakers Newcastle Village's new entry in the senior basebali league, came up with a decisive 14-2 win over Kendal Eagles on Monday afternoon at Jackson Memorial Park. These photos show some of the action and four of the veteran fans who will be recognized as regulars over the years. Second from the Ieft is Bud Rolph of Orono who recently celebrated his 9lst birthday. The Eagles lost several of their players to-Newcastle and are in the process of rebuilding, using several of last year's Kendal Royals to hoister their squad. By Terry Baker The Bowmanville Mens Town Softball League opened its 1978 schedule last week at Memorial Park and it looks like the league will be a success as ia past years, providing the weatherman co-operates. The league assists of fîve teams, Port Darlington Marina and Hotel, Kramp's Furniture, D&R Sports, Frank's Variety and a brand new entry, MacDonald Ford Ltd. Ail games are played at Memorial Park on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Ia the season opener on Tuesday night Curt Vanstone crashed a 1key double and added two singles to lead D&R Sports to a 13-7 win. over Port Darliagtoa Marina and Hotel. Vanstone doubled in a runa aad scored the go abead marker during a six run 5th inning rally that put D&R Sports ahead to stay. New players Peter Hobb and Rick Peckett and veterans Doug MeFeeters and Don Lorusso added two hits eacb for the winners, MeFeeters drilled a double and triple and drove in three ruas aad Peckett also had tbree RBI's. Dave Passant xvas 3 for 3 in a losing cause. Lorusso picked up the win and Mark Schneider took the loss. Under the ligbts la the second game of the- nigbt, Frank's Variety started their bid for a third coasecutive league championship wîtb a coavincing 11-4 win over Kramp's Furniture. The variety crew pouaded out 12 bits aad their attack was featured by a 3 for 4 night by Rick Woolner, who also drove in two runs. Terry Baker bad two bits for Frank's. Bill Cochrane scattered six bits and fanned seven for bis first wia of the year. Denais Biekeli took the loss but deserved a better fate as bis mates committed six errors at critîcal times during the guet y Tbe Award for most Double- TaIs and Double Olits for the year awarclwas presented by S.eeban to L. Bates wbo sscored 27 las and 24 outs, wbile nthe award for tbe year's bigb score weat to D., Bond wbo scored 131. The award was presented by J. Murphy. Team 1, the year's champions, was also pre- sented with the team basebaîl game. In Wednesday night's single game Frank's Variety rallied for four sixth ianing runs and held on to defeat a scrappy MacDonald Ford club 7-5. Terry Baker and Joe Burns led Frank's with 3 for 3 efforts. Baker had two doubles -and two RBI's. Paul Theissen and aewcomer Norm Caruana had two bits each for MacDonald Ford. Bill Cochrane spaeed eight hits for the win, Dick Stata tossed a fine game, even tbough he took the loss. Stata award witb 56 by R. Richards. J. Murphy presented the award for, bigh Basebaîl 9 innings 19 to: B. Partner, J. Saunders and N. Clowes. B. Partner also won the High Basebal1 Inning 7 and N. Clowes won the Higb Basebal ail year 199. E. Downey preseated those two awards. Aside from being the club champions for the year, and the team basebaîl witb 56 champions, team 1 was also the play-off champs. S. ',od Open$ didn't walk a man and fanned eight but was the victim of errors by his teammates. This week's schedule has Port Darlington Marina and Hotel and D&R Sports at MacDonald Ford on Tuesday. Wednesday migbt see Kramp's at Port Darlington Marina and on Tbursday night MacDonald Ford take on Kramp's Furni- ture and Fraak's Variety tackle D&R, Sports.
