St. Joseph's Students Spring Concert Packs BHS Auditorium Highlight of the evening was a special tribute and presentation to Mrs. Alan (Yvonne) Osborne who is retiring askindergarten teacher this year, after 12 years on the school staff. Principal Robert Gutteridge, far right, introduced Mrs. Osborne who was given an ovation by the audience and the presented with flowvers by Lisa Galea of the 1978 kindergarten while Julie Haynes, from her first kindergarten class, stood by. Every class )articipated to successfully cntertain parents and friends Juring the two hour presenta- Lion. Tbe program încluded square dancing from Grades 3 and -6-7, and disco dancing from Grade 5 and a group of girls from Grade 8. The Kindergarten, always an audience favorite, presented a program of baton twirlinig, songs and choral readings. The musical, selections involved Grade 4 in a medley of Disney songs and the school choir performing a medley from "Oliver". The Grade 7's presentation "Roaring Twenties" was well received as it included student accompanists on piano, guitar and accordian and some interesting, props, such. as a tandem bicycle. Grade 's rhythm band made up for any lack of musical ability through good volume and Grade 2's musical story of "Bambi" was pleasing botb to the eye and to the ear. Grade 6's presenta- tion of the "Grease" era of the 50's brought back many memories wbile Grade 546s, Health Hustle revealed that schools are still involved in strenuous exercising. Physical exercise was also obvious in a gymnastic display by three Grade 8 girls performed to the song "Goodbye Girl." The highligbt of the evening was tbe special presentation to Mrs. Yvonne Osborne, a Kindergarten teacher wbo is retiring after 12 years at the school. A representative from her first and last class was there to assist the principal', Mr.' R. Gutteridge, in bis tribute to a valued staff member. As the evneing drew to a close Mr. Gutteridge thanked both the audience and partici- pants and made a special, mention- of ail the work contributed by our music teacher, Mrs. Carol Wonnacott, to make the evening a success. Graduate Nvurses R euni -on Tbursday, June 8th was the 29th Annual Reunion of the Bowmanville Hospital Graduate Nurses held in the Christian Education Building, St. Paul's United -Church. There were 21 present coming from Penn. U.S.A., Belleville, Toronto, Peterborough, Cobourg, Oshawa, Hampton, Newcastle and Bowmanville. After registration a. delicious roast beef dinner was served by Mrs. Girardi and ber S ocial Committee of the U.C.W. Tbe floral decorations on tbe tables were the school colors - purpie and gold. Two beautiful bouquets of various colors of rbododen- drons were in tbe Fellowsbip Room, tbese had been brought by Mrs. Mae Hetz, Fairview, Penn. Mrs. Bessie Stephenson, President, conducted the business period after whicb the time, was'spent visiting, looking at snaps, scrap books, etc. 1At four o'clock a ligbt lunch was served by the Executive. Joe Caruana, deputy dîrector of community services, said Monday that the municipality is to meet next week to discuss how the patrols can be implemented here. Representatives of the Durbam Region Police will attend tbe meeting. (The Teens on Patrol TOP) program involves kids supervising kids, Mr. Caruana said. Under the program, older teenagers will report incidents such as vandalism and theft as well as other dangerous situations in local parks. Mr. Caruana said TOP is funded by government grants. TOP is expected to employ seven teenagers this summer. They will work in co-operation with recreation departments in the DurhamRegion. Senior Citizens' Week Proclaimed Next week is Senior Citizens' Week. Newcastle's Finance committee decided Monday night fo authorize the mayor to make tbe proclama- tion. Due to postal service, the letter informing the town of the special week was more than a month in arriving, hence the need for the finance, committee to act. The slogan for the week is "Reach Out." Police said David Czaplinski, of West Beach, was ordered out of a bathtub at knifepoint Friday evening and confined to tbe kitchen where bis captor drank the liquor. Later, Mr. Czaplinski managed to slip away to a neighbour's bouse and police were called.
