June 14, 1978 7 IIN ewcastle " a Waterworksi Ied n7 Water should begin to flow from the Newcastle Village water treatment, plant by August of 1979, according to a report presented to the Durhamn Region's publie works committee recently. W.A. Twelvetrees, Commissioner of Works for the Durham ýRegion, told the committee last week that the contract for the plant is underway. The sehedule completion date is August, 1979., The plant near the Lake 0O'ntario shoreline is expected to take 65 weeks ýo build. In, addition, extra Watermains plus an intake to bring water from Lake Ontario are under construction. The Durham works committee was told that there had beeà a delay in -the construction of the intake pipe into Lake Ontario but the work on the pipe is expected to be completed by August of this year. Mayor Queries Sweeping of Local Streets Two separate machines have been used, to sweep streets in Qrono, Newcastle and Bowmanville this year. One of the machines sweeps regional streets and the other sweeps local streets, Newcastle Mayor Garnet Rickard explained Tuesday, June 6, at a meeting of the Durham Region's public works committee. Mayor Rickard said he looked into the question of how streets are swept after receiving a petition from a group of residents on Liberty SI., in' Bowmanville who requested better service on their street. The works committee was told that some streets are swept by a regional machine and Liberty St. which is part of a regional road falis into this category. W.A. Twelvetrees, director of public, works for the Durham Region, explained that regional standards cal for streets to be swept, once a year during spring cleanup. However, a municipality may sweep its downtown streets once a week, the works committee was informed. "If we're going to go for a higher level of service, it has to be a matter that this committee authorizes," Mr, Twelvetrees said. "Obviously the more you do, the more it costs you", 'he added. The works commn-ittee was informed that in the past the Town of Newcastle had been responsible for sweeping regional roads as well as its own urban strets. The costs of caring for the urban roads were billed to the Durham Region., However, this practice was discontinued when the bill for sweeping in the Newcastle area was in the area of $5,000. The region's street sweeping requiremeats have been left with works depart- ment staff for a report on the) matter. Prt-T"ime Get'Raiseq Town of Newcastle Counicil has,,approved changes in the rate of pay for its part time employees and the increase granted school crossing guards will be retroactive to January 1.
