Meekness, Humility Boston Church setting is scene each June for the annual meeting of Christian Scientists who gather at the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Founded 99 years ago by religious leader Mary Baker Eddy, the denomination is still best known for commitment to Christian healing. The inspirational meeting attracts several thousand church members from around the world. Christian Scientists at the 83rd annual meeting in Boston June 5th were told to put aside "busywork, organizatinal mechanics and zeal for media exposure." The Christian Science Board of Directors in its message to the denomination's global membership emphasized that, "The need today is for more healing, more spirituality, meekness, humility". In a strongly-worded state- ment, the Directors warned against "powerful mental cross-currents at work against religion and against the moral code inculcated by Christianity." "It's obvious that the present period is marked by a conspicuous lack of stability -- in our homes, schools, and institutions, our commercial and public life as well as in individual experience," the Directors said. The Christian Science Church is a church of lay members, and the Directors are the principal officers of the international headquarters of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston Massachusetts, of which there are 38 branch churches in Ontario (first in Oshawa) and 3,500 branch churches throughout the world. The Board statement was rend by DeWitt John, Chair- man, who reminded the several thousand members gathered for the meeting that in 1894 the denomination's founder, Mary Baker Eddy, counseled: "The Church, more than any other institution, at present is the cement of society, and it should be the bulwark of civil and religious liberties." The Chairman called on twentieth century Christian Scientists to "go forward in the spiritual work which is the essence of Church -- loving one another, restoring the lost element of Christian healing, overcoming sin, and living the life of a Christian." In their review of denomin- ational activities, other church officers noted: A continuation of the gradual decline in member- ship, but also, an increase in the number of new branch churches formed during the past year (37 as compared with 22 ia 1976). An increase in individual contributions to the church (double the level of five years ago). "Significant stirrings of interest", amongst other Christian churches, in Christian healing, long a central aspect of Christian Science. Summer is here at last and by the amount of red sunburned skin around I think we had better discuss the effects of too much sun on your skin. You all know how painful a sunburn can be, but do you know that prolonged exposure year after year is responsible for premature aging of the skin and many skin cancers. Knowing this we should all sit in the shade and cover our skin when in the sun, but what about the sun lovers who are con- stantly in the sun. These people must patiently acquire their protective tans by this method: The first day sunbathe for only half an hour in the morning, keep in the shade until later afternoon, then take a little more sun. Increase your time in the sun each day; avoid midday rays, strong reflections from the water and the combina- tion of sun and wind. Whether you live under the sun all the time or whether it is only partial exposure, protection is essential. Some sun lotions are only moisturizers or greases which attract the rays and prevent drying. Be cautious, read labels. Using the proper cosmetic creams before and after are very important. It has long been known by scientists, biochemists and dermatologists that the skin is composed largely of protein and contains only a minute quantity of any oil. The majority of your cosmetic formulas have been formulated with oils. The belief that oils are going to have some miraculous effect, that cosmetic creams (all containing oils) will feed the skin is an error of scientific facts. It is the protein in your diet that sustains life, aids in the rebuilding of cellular structure of the body and prevents tiredness, aging and wasting away of the body. The proper use of naturally organic protein is much more beneficial to the skin than smothering it in oils, which the skin contains very little of. It has been proven conclusively by scientists Ciocca, Edwards and Herd that amino acids, the building blocks of protein, topically applied to the skin are actually taken up and become an integral part of the skin, contributing Need More Healing, Bowmanville Book Beat Todays Woman by Beverley Martin to a healthy normal condition. The board will be renting a mini-computer and selling the old machine which has been installed at Port Hope High School since 1969. Cost of the board's old computer was $120,000. Business Administrator Ai MacLeod said during a meeting of the school board in Cobourg last Thursday that the new equipment would be installed at the board's offices in Cobourg. He said he expected the computer would be operating by January 1, 1979. "It's a major move. I think MR. R. G'. He said the new equipment would be more economical to operate and explained that the mini- computer would require less space, is faster and more dependable than the large machines. In addition, he said the proposed computer would not need special air conditioning or special flooring like the machine installed by the board in Port Hope. One extra full-time position would be needed on' the computer staff if the mini computer was installed, Mr. MacLeod said. However, the administrator estimated that there would be fewer part time key-punch staff hired as result of the changes in equipment. Seven full-time personnel are required at the computer centre at present. "The proposal here would cost less in dollars than we are presently paying", Mr. MacLeod said. Frank Thom, director of education, agreed. "It isn't going to cost the board more. In fact, it's going to cost the board less," he explained. Trustees were told that the board bas been investigating changes in the computer system for the last year. The computer used by the board at Port Hope is operated for such things as student instruction services, student counselling and students' guidance information. The Victoria County Board of Education and the Peter- borough County board also use the board's computer. Accounts payable are pro- cessed by computers at Durham College and staff payrolls are processed by the Royal Bank of Canada, the trustees were told last week. Mr. MacLeod said it may be possible to eventually process accounts payable on the board's own computer in Cobourg, however, he indicated that there would be no changes in processing payrolls in the near future. At present, the board has budgetted $13,000 for computer services at Durham College plus another $3,000 for courier services. if you order before June 16 Now is the time to increase your TV viewing choice Your finest entertainment buy is basic cable PLUS with the lively world of CABLE TV!
