4 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, June 14, 1978 Conservation Centre Planning Open House This Week A new front was added to the premises of the Newcastle Community Conservation Centre last week. People passing by can see energy conservation projects done by the students of Durham Christian High School that are on display in the windows. The centre is planning an Open House to be held on Thursday, June 15, from 9 to 5, and on Friday, June 16, from 9 to 9. As part of the open house, there will be a Plant Swap where interested people can bring in a cutting from one of their houseplants and trade it with another that they might like to add to their collection. MacDonald Ford also had a game rained out on Wednesday night with D&R Sports who are struggling at the present time and trail Franks by ten points. On Tuesday night Dennis Bickell scattered seven bits and evened his record to 2-2 as Kramps Furniture downed Port Darlington Marina and Hotel 9-4. Joe Caruana paced Kramps with three hits while Len Kenny and Bickell added a pair. Doug Kramp homered for the winners. Jim Ryhorchuk had two safties for the losers. Marck Schneider (1-3) took the loss. Franks Variety clubbed D&R Sports 13-2 in Tuesdays second half of the doublehead- er. Bill Cochrane (5-2) scattered seven hits for the win. Terry Baker, Joe Humeniuk and Cochrane had three hits each for the winners. Rick Woolner and Bob Tugwood added a pair and Humeniuk drove in five runs with a timely triple and double. Jeff Cann (0-1) took the loss and led D&R's attack with a pair of hits. On Thunsday night, Steve Burns collected three hits, scored twice and made two spectacular fielding plays to lead Franks Variety to a 13-2 win over Port Darlington Marina and Hotel. Burns broke out of a prolonged slump with his bits. Bob Tugwood also sparkled in the field and added a pair of hits and Joe White also added a pair of safeties to Franks attack. Bill Cochrane (6-2) tossed the win while Marck Schneider (1-4) took the loss. Jim Ryhorchuk had three hits for the Mariners and Dave Passant added a pair. Kramps downed MacDonald Ford 11-2 in the last game of the week to move into the tie with Port Darlington Marina and Hotel. Dennis Bickell (3-2) scattered six hits for the win. Ken Vivian had three hits for Kramps. Rick Hall, Bob Price and Joe Caruana added a pair. Len Foster (2-1) took the loss. Miss Elsie Rowe, age 70, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Rowe (nee Hall) of Orono passed away at the Nel Gor Castle Nursing Home, Newcastle on Friday, June 9th, 1978 after a long illness. Orono United Church Women are holding a General Meeting on Thursday, June 15th in the Main Hall at 7:30 p.m. HAYDON Mr. and Mrs. Reid Harness and Lisa, Orono, were Saturday night callers at Mr. and Mrs. Ross Ashton's. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Black- burn and family, Orono, were Saturday supper guests of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Blackburn and family. Miss Mary Potts, Toronto, spent the weekend at her home. TYRONE The regular meeting of Tyrone Senior Citizens was held Wednesday, June 7th at the Community Centre. This is the final meeting of the season until a picnic meeting on the first Wednesday in September. The Senior Citizens Club chose a beautiful sunny day on Saturday, June 10th for a bus trip to the Farmers Market, Kitchener. Mr. John Mitchell was serenaded on the return trip in honour of his 90th birthday Monday, June 12th. At the euchre party on Friday evening the results were as follows: 1st Earl Prescott, 2nd Lee Reeves, 3rd Florence Kilpatrick, 4th Eunice Ego, 5th Meta Swain, 6th Adam Sharp.
