Block Parents Nqeed More Help Local officiais with the Block Parent Organization say there are over 250 Block Parents in the town of Newcastle and the group is still looking for volunteers. Debbie Dow, chairman of the- Block Parents' schooî committee in the Courtice area, said recently that she needs a school chairman for Block Parents at the Maple Grove School and help is also needed at the South Courtice School. There are now 48 Block Parents in the Courtice and Maple Grove area and Block Parent programs are underway in Newcastle Village, Orono, Hampton and Bowmanville. The program is designed to take care of children while they are away from home. They are offered assistance if they, are a pproached by strangers, bothered by bullies, sick or in need of any other kind of emergency assistance. Children are taught to recognize red and white Block Parent signs in volunteer's homes and they can seek help from parents in these houses.. Debbie Dow explained last week that she believed a Block Parent operation in a rural area is just as important as one in a city or a town because people are longer distances from each other.
