On Saturday evening, June 24th at Bowmanville Legion Hall, about one hundred and thinty-five relatives and friends attended the twenty- fiftb wedding anniversany party in honour of Mn. and Mrs. Win Collier (nee Bette Gray). Along with local celebrants, were friends from Meaford, Toronto, Oshawa and Port Hope who presented the bride and groom with several gifts, card tabhe and chairs and patio furnitune. On Wednesday, June 21, Mrs. Bertha Touchburn, Orono and Mrs. Madeleine Buckley attended a garden party in Oshawa in honour of those who were teaching in 1918. Mrs. Gertie Stapleton, Bowmanvilhe, was one of those nine teachers honouned. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Christopher Cooper (nee Rosemary Tisnovsky) who were married in Our Lady of Mercy Church, Port Hope, on Saturday, June 24, 1978. The reception followed in the Newcastle Community Hall. Mr. and Mrs. R. Brenton Rickard attended the Port Hope Lions' Installation on Saturday night., On Tuesday, January 20, Marilyn and Alec Martin were among the guest ministers and Presbytery Executives and their spouses wbo were entertained at the Stephen Saywell cottage at Caesarea. Mr. and Mrs. Reg Woodhams were Monday evening guests of Mr. and. Mrs. Robin Alldred. Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Alldred, Oshawa and Mrs. A. Wright, who will soon be returning to Scotland, were Tuesday evening visitors with the Alldred's. Many picriics were held in Orono Park on, Sunday. About 65 Martin family members beld their reuniora. The McCullough family was enjoying a ball game. The Soutbern Ridge CB members were having a good time. The Parish Picnic of the Anglican Church was very well attended. Friends of the Helmer family, Lancaster, were greatly shocked on Monday nîght, June 19, to hear the sad news of Bill's death. The sympathy of the village is extended to wife Debbie and childr en Angie, Lori and Jamie. They bad made many friends during Constable Helmer's years on the Newcastle OPP force, and many attended the funeral in Lancaster on Thursday. At Newcastle Public School on Thursday afternoon and evening, June 23, 1978, former students, associate teachers and friends attended a retire- ment tea in honour of Mrs. Helen Nesbitt. Mrs. Nesbitt was the recipient of several lovely gifts, in appreciation of ber many years of service. Mr. Glenn Allin and Mrs. Gladys Brown are patients in Memorial Hospital, Bowman- ville. Mr. Ivor Brawley remains a patient in Oshawa General Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. David Milton, Ottawa, spent the weekend' with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murray Paterson and witb the family -attended the Cooper-Tisnovsky wedding in Port Hope on Saturday, June 24th. Rev. David Spivey accompanied Rev, Don Tansley and Rev. Chas Newton, Osbawa, to Kirkridge Chrstian Centre, Pennsylvanîa, where they attended a Preaching and Worsbip Seminar hast week. Anglican Church News Rev. and Mrs. Allan Haldenby went to Echo Bay, Ontario, for the Centennial celebrations of St. George's Anglican Church in Echo Bay on June 23rd. He took greetings from St. George's Newcastle and preached a sermon recalling many of the happenings in this bis home Parish. The Indian Parisb of Garden River near Sault Ste. Marie bad its first missionary in 1832 and was the Mother Parisb of Sault Ste. Marie and Echo Bay. About the samne time, regular work began in the Newcastle, Bowmanvihle area. Tbey were all in the same Diocese at that time. On Sunday, June 25th the people of St. George's and St. Saviour's combined for a picnic at Orono Park. As this was in the Octave of St. John Baptist Day, the Rector spoke about John Baptist gatbering pple at the River Jordan adthe picnic setting of those Sermons and the Sermons Jesus preached on the hilîs and by the Lake in the Holy . Land. Saint George's ACW wound up their meetings for the spring with a pot luck meal at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. William Lake, Sr., Lake Shore. Games and contests provided an enjoyable time in this lovely location. United Church News Morning worsbip in Newcastle United, Church on Sunday, June 25th included summer Comimunio n Service. Rev. David Spivey showed the children a New Testament whîcb he had received when he became a Canadian citizen recently. It made hlm proud to be a citizen of a nation which presents a Book of Love, hope and goodwill to its new citizens. His sermon, Resigna- tion or Faith, stressed that faith carnies us beyond anger and is a creative ongoing relation bringing new hope.. The Prayer for the week is, Lord, your love surrounds me, the whole of me in the whole of ife. May I know and dling to that assurance tbrough, the days abead. During July, the Newcastle congregation shares worship with the Orono Pastoral Charge. The Lions donated $5,000 to the arena Tuesday, June 20. This amount brings the Lions share of the arena contribution to $15,000. In this photo, Del Moore, president of the Newcastle Lions Club, presents the cheque to Joe Berney, co-chairman of the arena building committee. Fund raisers in Newcastle estimate that they now 'have $115,00 in donations. Another $70,000 is necessary to complete the community's share of contributions towards the arena project.
