Man Hurt in Fatal Collision A car accident involving a Bowmanville man has left one woman dead and five people in hospital. Brian Rogers, 19, of Bowmanviile and his passenger, Paula Tkaczuk, 19, of Oshawa, are in satisfactory condition at Oshawa General Hospital aftier their- Chevrolet collided with a Voikswagen con- taining a family of four. The accident occurred at 6:15 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Regional Road 2 and the Oshawa- Scugog Town Line. Dead is Mrs. Lorna Shelley, 35 of Sunderland. In critical condition at Oshawa General Hospital is her husband Alan, 40, and their son Clin- ton, 11, at Sick Chidlren's Hospital in Toronto. A second son, Gavin, 6, is in satisfactory condition at Oshawa General. The 'Jaws of Life', used to free the trapped victims from their cars, is credited with saving the lives of the occupants. It took minutes instead of the usual hour to free the victims. Hamipton'Man Rescues Two In Crash Qick-thinking on the part of a Hampton man has saved the lives of an Oshawa woman and her 11-year- ol d son. Andy Jarvis rescued Harriet ilolton and her son Kurt from their burning car after an accident that. left both vehicles in flames. The ac- cident, which left two people dead, occurred at the intersection of Audley Road and the Forth Con- cession in Ajax on Saturday after- noon. After pulling the Holtons to safety Mr. Jarvis went to the aid, of the driver of the second car, 16-year-Old Michael Jaquith and his passenger, 17-year-old David Gilmour. While Mr. Jarvis managed to remove the driver from the blazing car he could not save the passenger. The driver was later pronounced dead on arrivai at the hospital. Both men were from Ajax. Mrs. Van Driel was guest of honor at a roast, dinner and dance held at the Oshawa Golf Club Thursday, September 21. She was presented with gifts from school staff and student council. One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of the Principal's Award for outstanding service to the school during 1978. This year' s award-winner is Mrs. Van Driel. Principal Harry O. Bradley presented the Principal's Award and also acted as master of ceremonies for the eveflifg. Approximately 110 friends and family, and school staff attended the retirement party. concluded with the tests of a good citizen - "Hon esty, Truthfulness, Self -denial, Fairness, Devotion, and Loyalty." Mr. and Mrs. Phil Gilmer and boys were at the same fair, Sunday afternoon and again, there was a splendid attendance. Mr. and Mrs. Ken Fletcher, with Mr. and Mrs. Richard MacCarl of Whitby were- Saturday visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Nelson Parliament in Cannington. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Smith of Powassan, near Sudbury, were Friday visitors, here, with Mrs. Agnes' Burley. visitors with the latter, on Sunday, included Mr. and Mrs. E. McEwen of Peterbor- ough and Mr. and Mrs. Ron Burley of Newcastle. Mr. and Mrs. Anthony Ton were at Lakehurst, over the weekend and their son, John of Port Hope was a visitor on Satuday. Wyin Medals At Games forý The Disabled On July 1, 2, 3, 1978 at Windsor, Ontario, Lisa and Laurie Hooper of 36 Parkway Cres., Bowmanville competed in The Ontario Games for the Physically Disabled. Laurie won two gold medals. One, was for club throw, the other for light shot put. Lisa won a bronze medal for swimming 25 metre free style. She missed out on the silver by 1/2 a second. This was the first time competitors with Cerebral Palsy competed under their own category. Previously they went under the Wheel Chair Association. Since this cate- gory was new this year there was no provisions for them to be able to compete in the Canada Games in Newfound- land.
