The Canadian Statesman Bnwmanville. (btober 18. 1978 15 Catholic Women's League Holds Exciting Bazaar Mr. VanderBeek - bareton, Harry Kooy - tuba and Mr. J. Van Noord - O.M.C.A.'s newly acquired tympani. K.J. Mulder After opening devotions by OCMA president Mr, Chris Nobel, Mr. Mulder played a Toccata by Dubois, a beautiful fantasy on a Genevan hymn. Then with choir and audience "'Abide With Me" was sung in 5 part harmony with audience singing the melody. Next Mr. Mulder played the Andante and Allegro from Handel's Concerto No. 10. The andante was quiet, pastoral, giving one the feeling of being in a summer meadow. The typically Handel trilis (butterfiies and swallows?) prevented the imagery becoming sleepy. The allegro was bouncy and playful with frequent quiet intervals. During Mulder's playing one could almost see a child skipping into the meadow, crouChing at intervals to study ladybug or flower. 1 have no idea if this is indeed what Handel had in mind. If it is it would be hard to fit, the grandiose almost majestic final bars into the foregoing scene, unless of course the child went home and got spanked for running out instead of doing the dishes. Whatever it means is really immaterial though its fun to think about. The f act that does count is that a beautiful work was superbly executed. The choir then bounced into a joyful gospel hymn "Saved"_ by R.M. Hickman. Timing, crescendoes and diminuendoes were very effective. Mr. Mulder expertly played C.H.M. Rincks "Variations on 'God Save The Queen'. " In this work it seems as if Rinck attempts to portray the song as it would be written by various major composers. The first was much in the style of Mozart, the second was reminiscent of Bach, the third verv much Handel followed by strains of Widor, Sibelius and Beethoven. It was very effectively composed and very well played. "O Triumph Ail Ye Ransomed" from Beethoven's oratorio "Mount of Olives" was very beautifully performed with soprano soloist Mrs. Rie Schoute at times, seemingly without effort singing above the choir, organ and brass quintet. After a sing-a-long and intermission Mulder played bis fantasv on a dutch hvmn "Praises Be To God The Father" a tune known also as "lAngels From The Realms of Glory." It was indeed glorious praise to God the Father. Another sing-a-long was followed by another Mulder improvisation on a -dutch hymn describing God's being a refuge in a storm. Indeed the music stormed and raged but blissful calm descendea in the music as it carried on to a quiet end. From ,thé incomparable music of Handel's Messiah came "The Trumpet Shall Soun d" with baretone John De Cloe and Bill Kooy on bis trumpet, followed by the choir's triumpet rendition of "And the Glory of the Lord." One of the most well known works of Widor, the tocatta from bis fifth symphony was played with incredible skill and speed. Leendert Kooy's Cantata No. 17 on "Lead On Oh King Eternal" was performed with participation by all. As closing number Mr. Mulder played again as he did 2 years ago, bis fantasy on "Oh Canada" into which the Dutch national anthem "Wilhelmus" was skilfully woven. To understand why this, is so moving to Dutch Canadians it must be realized that "Wîlhelmus" is more than a national anthem, it is a hymn of faith. It was written in the shadow of the Spanish Inquisition and is a song of dedication of self to God, and a trusting prayer for release from tvrannv. During the war years it was sung in churches, from trainloads of prisoners Dachau, 'from truckloads of voung underground workers riding to their execution,in air raid shelters, even in the streets upon receivîng bad news and good. It was "Wilhelmus" that greeted the Tommies as they rumbled in to liberate the Dutch towns. It is more than a national anthem. It is an "Amen" to Psalm 23. To hear that entwined with the national anthem of the adopted homeland of Dutch Canadians is beautiful indeed, a fitting close to a beautiful evening. Night Hawks High Single - A. Burgess 286.
