The Canacian Statesman, Letter to the Editor R.R. 4, Bowmanville I May 7,1979 Dear Sir: The School Board cannot afford to maintain a swimming pool! A few suggestions are offered: (1) Perhaps one administrator might be ellminated ($40,000 to $52,000 a year - flot to forget transportation or expenses allowances). 1 guarantee the quality of education in the classrooms would flot suffer. (2) Perhaps the board could cease giving themselves increases in view of the fact that this is flot their sole source of income. (3) Perhaps a cou ple of trustees' jobs could be dispensed with and at least oneerson with a "phlosophy of education" even remotely based on a nodding acquaint- ance with the great thinkers of the past in this regard (St. Thomas Aquainas, Sir Richard Livingstone, The Harvard Report, yea and even the similarities between "Deweyism" and the hallow- ed "Haîl-Dennis Report"') might be hired. How comforting to realize that we, as taxpayers, will be able to afford to provide services (water, sewage, pavement et cetera) to yet unbuilt concrete jungles and monuments to "progress" under the guise of providing jobs! Nothing about providing a better life. We now have more shopping facilities than we can apparently maintain with any semblance of dignity or charm. We have now removed (at the taxpayers' expense) the last vestiges of natural beauty from our main streets. (our trees). We live in a wonderfully progressive environment wthin a stone's throw of the deadliest threat yet known to man. But, the writer well remembers Counillor Holli- day's clear and unqualified "No" when asked at a political meeting whether or not he would support a nulear development at Darlington. Let us hope that he will be as successful in his non-support of a pool '! We see smoke (and when it is flot steam and we see it, there are pollutents) rising from our "health-preserving" and industrial institutions in our immediate neighbour- hood. We cannot provide accom- modation (where it could be most cheaply erected) for our aged citizens because at somre distant date (not in the last fiftly years, however), pro- gress in industrial expansion might be impeded'. We do pay for our resultant folies - and pay heavily - in our mental hospitals, our jails, our social services and un- fortunately, our children and t heirs will damn us for our ignorance, stupidity and selfishness. Yea, verily, "The love of money is the root of ail evil"! Sincerely, W. Bail. P.S. As for Mr. Clarke's somewhat curious statements - how many people does he thinik have worked to collect the donations to build the pool? Do ail these NOT want the pool!1 Let us hope that he is flot as obtuse in other transac- tions concerning our welfare? God help usl It's a long walk from Bowmanville to Civic Auditorium, The Boys' club Club or Donevan but flot so far for Courtice residents! 50 AN VILLE AUDIOnVISION PRESNTSTHE,,REALISTIC SYSTEM, 0F THE a prace tag Drop by to see and hear our ot-her great MONTH.
