Sincerely Mrs. Margaret Adams, 109 Church Street, Bowmanville. 17 Quebec St. Oshawa, LIH 2K3 May 6, 1979 728-3725 Dear Editor: A few comments on the Kifest. Being intcrested main- ly in the advanced vocal and piano classes, I found that the adjudication by Mrs. Elaine Broughton and Mrs. Margaret McLellan ta be friendly, constructive and scholarly., witb the. latter so ably, illustrating pianistically the rigbt and the wrOng way. Noticeable this year was a greater number listed in the lieder section, a more difficuit but vcry rewarding type of music. Here the accompanists - official ones not allowed - were rightly included in the adjudication.,A few of them, probably owing to insufficient understanding of German words and the mood of the saing, had some trouble with proper interpretation, exces- sive volume sometimes drowning out tbe lyrics. Yet it was gratifying ta have most af the lieder sung in the original language. Before ber adjudi- cations, Mrs. Broughton's introductory remarks on practically every facet af lieder singing wcre most helpful. In Junior Lieder the question arises whether in future it might be fairer ta divide this class into (a) 16 years and under and (b) 17 ta 18, since the younger per- formers rarciy have the maturity, including volume of tone, ta compete with the older ones. Unfortunately, reference bas to be made ta the frustrating fact that most of the pianists and singers did not audibly announce the titles and composers of their pieces, though last year it was seldom even attempted. And sa I had ta obtain this information from some on their way out or, if possible, by trying ta phone them. Finally, on pp. 63 and 73 of the program there were two unnecessary misspellings of German words, viz., Orgel- buchlein, which needs an umlaut (ane double quotation marl< or « twa horizontal periods) over the 'u', or simply an extra "e" aftcr the 9"u'; the other word i s Sanger, the "a" of which getting the same treatment.
