Wayne Steeves, Senior By D.M. Dineen, Chief Librarian, Newcastle Public Library System What does a dictionary do? Basically it tells the meaning of a particular word or phrase. When most people think of a dictionary, they think of one which tells meanings of words in the English language. The Bowmanville library bas English dictionaries of course, as well as French, German, Swedish, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Latin, Greek, Russian and Hungarian. In addition, dictionaries are available which show how words may be used. These include dictionaries of abbreviations and of synonyms and antonyms. Specialized dictionaries which show definitions for a particular art or science are also in the library. Music, health, law, veterinary medicine, art, sports, biology, aviation and mathematics are a few of the fields covered. Need help with a word, cal the library - it's as near as your phone. The use of Video Tape Recorders has taken a leap forward in the churches of the Bay of Quinte Conference with the purchase of equipment for the use of Presbyteries and churches. Machines, playback units and'cassette catalo gues are being made available to United Church congregatiops. James mIs urance Agency Limited 24 King St. E. Doctor 0f Chiropractic 96 Queen Street Bowmanville Phone 623-9297 Health Physicist at the station says ."IYou ,ýcould drink that water for 500 years before, you'd receive as much radia-' tion as you'd get in a single chust X'ray". He further noted that if a member of the public was dependent entirely on the local water supply he would receive about 0.18 milli rem of radiation per year from the tritium emissions from the Pickering station. - This should be compared with the annual limit permitted for intake of radiation by the general public of 500 milli rem or 100 milli rem per year of natural background and, approximately 50 milli rem per year from medical uses. He went on to say that a move from Pickering to Banff, Alberta would increase radiation b y about 30 milli rem per year and a return flight to Europe would result in an additional 5 milli rem. "lWe certainly haven't kept any secrets about our releases of tritium into the 'lake" the Station Manager added, "in fact, we have spokento public officials a number of times and documents relating to releases are on record". The> Atomic Energy Control Board regulates limits for the concentration of tritium' in drinking water. These set 100 per cent of the maximum permissable concentration at an annual dose limit of 500 milli rem for a member of thé general public. In summarizing, he said thiat tritium bas been detected in the past and will continue to be detected in the future but stressed that, the low levels of, tritiuln that end up in the lake at Pickering Generatin~ Stationl create "no hazard' Mr. Ryder pointed out, releases are tightly controlled and that the station is required to notify the water treatment plant before there could' be any serious effect on the drinking water. Arrange- ments have been made to temporarily close the water treatmnent plant intake should it become necessary - this would have no immediate effect on the water supply due to the fact that the plant bas at least one day's reserve sup- ply. A milli rem is 1-1000 of a rem, the international measure of radiation. Mr. Ryder's remarks fol- lowed a public meeting with Pickering, Council which was called to discuss contingency planning for the community. .GiveHeartFufld nu PRIDE OFOANADA, SLICED 1-B Side Bacon ..K .4 PRIDE0F CANADA 1 $-B. The Conference was held at Trent. University, Peter- borough from May 25tb to 28th. The young people-came from churches in each of the seven Presbyteries of the Bay of Quinte Conference. The inspiration to hold a Youth Forum in conjunction with the Conference' sessions came from a similar, nation wide Forum held in conjunc- tion with the United Church of Canada General Council Meet- ings in the summer of 1977 in Calgary, Alberta. The young people came with a variety of expectations. Some came expecting a Youth Rally weekend, some came expecting to be observers of teadult Conference. There were elements of both. The Youth Forum held some of its sessions apart from the aduits, considering the place and involvement of Youth in the Church. At other times they became active partici- pants in the discussions of the main Conference. 77 King Street East, Bowmanville Values Effective at Bowmanville Store Only - Confertee 'forote Minisry"c, foce diistyfcussio ntewoe p oftd iistrno the hurchopi aod rehentlyofteCuate tndoughts and directions associated with it.
