8 The Canadian Statesman, BoWmanville, June 6, 1979 Section Twa, Newcastle School Hosts Spring Fest '79 Prosecuting attorney Elan Rickard cross-examines Vernon Verb as played by Matthew Yates in the "Trial of Billy Scott" performed by Grade 6 as part of Newcastle Public School's Spring Fest '79. Grades 4 and 5 of Newcastle Public School delighted the audience by singing "The Bilîboard Song". The grade six performance was given before parents and friends at Newcastle Public School hast Tuesday. Bethany The Manvers Arts and Crafts Festival filed every expectation, with variety aad enjayment in each feature. Friday evening was the "SpringMelodies" programme with Billy Meek as special guest. Thea Saturday was a busy day, when concessions were attractîvely decorated with products on display. Among these înteresting displays were macrame articles of artistic beauty; ceramic models ta catch every eye; woodwork, that must have neqluired hours of planning a5 tedious work, decorations, especialiy Christmas ones that shawed natural talent of beauty; Artex display especiaiiy emphasizing a child's noom; nugs of every shape and form that could only be done by one with much imagination and patience; crochet work with every vaniety of stiches; bead wo2 that proved what could be accomplished with time and ability; cake decorating, with emphasis on Father's Day, made a most attractive table; the paintings proved Manvers has much talent in that line; mimrons with most attractive frames; sewving of neal, attractive articles took the eye of the spectators and wood work, professionally done and many other booths proved as more than one persan remarked, "I didn't realize Manvers had so maay talented residents." Demonstrations were in progress too, and the Golden Star Senior Citizens, besides an attractive booth of hand made articles, (quilt, lace tablecloths, afghans, mitts, pillow slips, place mats, bed- jackets, etc.) they also quilted a quilt duriag the two day session. AnotheÉ interesting demonstration was the pracess af wool from the sheep ta the finished product. Cake decorating was also being demonstrated in a most artistic manner. There was sa much ta see, 1 hape 1 haven't missed anyone, for with the plants and shrubs as background and the attractive table af home- baking as well as the attractive displays weli couid the Reeve George Neals say, "This is samething Manvers can be very proud - work well done." The Saturday evening pragram of. local talent and Graham Tawnsend's vialia numbers was Most entertaining and the littie people weren't left aut, far a magical shaw and a "polka dot" pragram was especially for them. The canteen was a busy spot! Congratulations is extended to ail the people who were responsible for a week-end of "Manvers talent" as well as meeting and chatting with old friends and acquaintances. The Manvers Festival was concluded on Wednesday evening in a most enjoyable and appropriate manner when the Grandview Intermediate Choir presented "The Wizard of Oz" in "exciting encaunters and delightfui sangs."~ Lana Malcolm, in her charming manner, and soft singing voice, portrayed Dorothy; David Casgrave was the schoiarly scarecraw; Andy McLaughlin gat his "heart" despite the fact he was a tin-man; Tracy Howard, as the cowardly lion, was able ta get her courage. Aunt Em was Caralyn Kenniagtan, Uncle Henry - Angela Lanz, the good witch - Ali Scott and the wicked witch - Carol Saushaîl with Diana Smith as Glinda the Good. The- Munchins were: Shawna Clark, Carnie Miller, Deanna Vivian, Dianna McCabe, Lynn McGill, Angle Herzick, Lianna Horslen, Patricia Robinsan, Tracy Bradley, Liana Preston, Shirley Greaves, Julia Thiele,, Masjenka Van Dyk, Lorraine Musson, Ann Armstrong, Beth Wilcken, Anne Slute, Carnie Lynn Badluk, Diahn Goodaîl, Angie Grant, Donna Fianey and Clleen Shea. The Craws were: Lisa McGill, Peter Lomax, Mike Meneely, Donna Marshall, Bret Robinson and Carol Snushall. The Carnstaiks were: Christine Lanz, Carol Ramjohn, Kim Smith, Susan Stacey, Teri Logan, Renee Singerling, Joanne Taon, Danlene Gillespie. The Trees were: Sherry Brown, Lisa Johaistan, Susan Strong, Tmna Peciak, Tracey Rupert, Brenda Combdon, Susan Hackenberg, Aan Keir, Andrea Skeae. Newtonville Hall was presented last Thursday, May 31 to members of the Hall Board. The cheque was from the Town of Newcastle and was presented by Ward Three Councillors Bill Clarke and Keith Barr. Funds will be used to re-paint the interior and install new siding and insulation. Labor for the project will be supplied by the community through volunteers. Newtonville's community hall is over 100 years old. The land on which it is located was acquired in 1854 and a hall was built on the property in 1857. The choir then presented Mrs. Carew with a bouquet of flowers which she asked the leading lady, Lana Malcolm ta accept-and give them ta her mother, Mrs. Murray Malcolm, who is iii in, the hospital. Mr. W. Capeliag, the principal of Grandview Elementary School, praised Mrs. Carew, Mrs. Scott and the choir for a well-performed evening of enjoyable entertainment. Preparations are uaderway for the Grandview Track and Field Days, June 6th and 7th for the aine years and aider boys and girls. Grandview received many winninig ribbons for the Cross Country Meet. The Manvers Arena was the setting for the Graadview Gymnastic Club when parents, friends and students viewed their talents and skills and their many gymnastic routines which' they used at the LE. Weldon competition in March. The Cartwright Public School attended and presented some of their gymnastic manoeuvres. The grade eight pupils of Grandview had a schooi field tnip ta Ottawa where they visited the Parliament Buildings, the War Museum and the Sparks St. Mail. Ora Palmer had the misfortuae ta faîl and break her ankie. We trust she may not have ta endure too much discomfort. Our sincere wishes for better health are extended ta Mr. Wilmer Graham, whom wve understand was unabie ta conduct the United Church service on Sunday. Right Reverend Ailan Read, Suffrage Bishop of the Diocese of Toronto, visited the Parish on Tues., May 29th when he met with the people of Christ Church, St. Thomas and Triaity Church. He spoke ta the gathering and then they had the opportunity toaiak questions aad talk about the Church. He then drove ta St. John's where over a cup of tea, he spoke ta the people, of St. John's, St. Paul's and St. Mary's. Bishop Read wili be performing the Confirmation service on June l8th, when twenty-four young candidates will be confirmed. Congratulations ta Ailan Lawrence in his election as the Federal Member of Parliament for this year. We wish him every success and God's blessing upon his work in the important task before him and his fellow members of the newly elected government ofaur land. Jean Spearing is back in Bethany after a short visit with her famiiy in Ireiand. Jean is pleased ta report that her father, who was iii, is improving and aur thoughts and prayers are with Jean and her family as they continue ta farm without the love and instruction from a husband and father, who passed away this spring. Best wishes for health improvemeat is aur desire for Mrs. Ruby Logan. Also ta Mrs. Irene Challice, who is in Civic Hospital and get-well wishes are extended ta Mrs. Cecile Staples.
