Lawn Bowlers St art Season By Norman Smith The 1979 season started at the Bowmanville Lawn Bowling Club, Queen and Temperance streets, last week, with a turnout of about 24 at each of the Tuesday and Thursday jitneys, with several greens occupied by players in pick-up games on other even- ings. We are happy to report that several new members have already joined the club this sesn jn we are looking forward to welcoming many more in the next few weeks. No previous experience is necessary as we are glad to offer free instruction and use of bowls to all beginners. Senior citizens have their special night each Monday, and we should like to see a reupion of the interest dpaed a year or so ago by these value d members of our community. Bowling is free on 0f course, not everyone goes to watcb the cars. Keke Rosberg was shatter- ing track records on Saturday but, it was Jacky Ickx wbo took the checkered flag on Sunday. Ickx, consistently one of the top ail-round drivers over the last decade, easily won Sunday's 148 mile event while Rosberg, who's boping to take a winning Can-Amn season into a Formula One ride, next year, was running bimself out of contention. Rosberg, of Finhand, broke Mark Donabue's six year ohd track record on Saturday and turned in the fastest lap of the day on Sunday before be lost control on corner eight and lut the wall. He wasn't injured but bis car was too damaged to continue. Meanwhihe, Ickx sat back and waited for the up and comîng star to make a mistake. "It's almost impossible to overtakeon this course so my strategy 'was to sit back and wait for the rigbt opportun- ity," said the Belgian wbo bas Monday nights f-or Senior Citizens. "If you don't have compe- tent team, you have no chance of winning." American Elhiot Forbes Robinson was second, Geoff Lees of England was third and George Folîmer in bis first race since a near fatal crash hast year, placed fourth.
