CURVPLY WOOD PRODUCTS ON THEIR NEW:PLANT IN ORONO Power and Lighting Instajiations By, ORVILLE CHATERT On Monday, June 22nd Curvply Wood Products will display to the! public an operation which is a farl cry to that established in Orono in 1949. This local industry lias in f ifteen years risen from a single hand operated press, moulding plywood, to the largest Canadian manufacturer of curved plywood. Todlay, Curvply not only lias the greatest portion of, the Canadian market but also exports to the United States and other §maller' countries as Puerto Rico. They in- tend to expand their exports fur ther in the future. Curvply was first established as Orono Wood Products by Mr. E. Il. Samuel in 1949 in what was known as the old flax miii. After fire levelled the building the oper- ation moved to a new 5000 square foot building on Cobbledick street. At this location the industry lias grown to its present status and has in effect outgrown its facili- ties. This necessitated new accomn- modation which, have now been completed on a new location east of highway 115. Curvply will con- tinue to operate out of their two plants. The new plant will house the head office of the firm and will also supply storage and prepara- tien of veneer. The original plant wil continue as a production plant with the moulding of various shapes of plywood. Today under the' management ofM.Samuel and Mr. Klasner the firm lias advanced toward an- tomated production. Six hydraulice presses are continually in opera tien, supported by automatîc rou ters, shapers, grain printing, and high speed 'curtaîn coaters' to a)pply the finish to the product. l nstantaneous fused splcers are also used to join veneer which was in the past, a slow operation of stapling. Many other features have been added in the produc- tion line that have keep the firm ~competitive in its field. The new plant adds further posý sibilities and features te the oper- ation of Curvply in Orono. A mo- dern telephone communication system lias been installed to men- tion only one within the walls, of plant number two. At the new location there is room for further expansion when' the time arises. Also in this area land is available for further in- dustries who miglit desire teole- cate in this district. A total of thirty-eight acres exists in ail. The public is invited to tour both plants on Monday from the hours of 3 toe 5 o'ciock in the af ternoon.
