Memnebr of the Ontario Weekly Newspaper Assoc, In The Last Step it is possibly no great surprise that the original est- Émated cost of the water. system in Orono has exceeded tkhe sii-n ýof $17,1,000.00. This figure was established in 1960 ajnd l!,ter eonfirmied again in mid 1962 prior to holding the last w.ter vote. Since 1932 the economy of the country has advanced considerably and with it the price schedule o! such install- aýtions. Fusther additions have also been placed in the syste.r which bas also tended to increase the eost. With recent alterations in some o£f the tendered prices fhe 'ai construction cost now rests, as of Monday, Feb- ruary lSth, at $206,309-40. This price does not, however, inclucie land costs of $1100400, possible legal dues, interim 1'inanýcing which may occur during the first year. Delays tin the projeet, which have, been many, have cýertainfly been costly. It was originally intended to have the systern- installed in the year 1963 and here it is early 1965. It is mpossible to place a finger on any one circumstance causjiîg the delays but it appears to be a syndrome of ,minor delays along the whole course of the projeet. No)w that the tenders have been opened the final step is in progress. The engineers have satisfied themselves w4iththe nature of the tenders and- have made their rec- ommendations to the Ontario Water Resource Commission. Trhe Cumimission must now takie the project before the Mun- icipal Board for their final approval, which on obtaining, co-Zntr.aets can be signed for the work to be undertaken. it hbas been the feeling o! the, OWRC that the pro- je-ct ;A,11 gain its final approval. Due to the fact that the projeect is to be financed wider thle Municipal Loan Fund Act an outright grant of ztear $35,O0& will he received. This , raxt will reduce the cos tc' appro'ximatelyr the eiginal estimated do)st and the -izikpayer wiIl find his annual charges as those originally estima ted. it iýs to be hoped that the Trustees can now keep Cie project on -the move and that installation of the system bcmsa fact within as short a time as possible. PRQQOF 0F NEED FOR JAIL WANTED Poýrt Hope Counicil recentl1y pas- sed a motion that, the Counties Council be advised that the Port Hope counclil is flot in favour of participation in the proposed reg- lonal counties j ail, unless a def- muite need fer more space than is available at the present j ail in Cobourg is proven. At council meeting two weeks ago Mayor Benson Spicer com- mented that last year more than $30,000 was spent on the jail at Cobourg, and Counties Councîl was told at th~e time that-with the- renovations completed the j ail woul be adequate forÉ the next 25 years. A similar motion was presented at a sesson of the Bowmanville council recently, but alter a bit of discussion the seconder with- drew hls name and the motion was deferred until a later mieeting. This was to glve councillors a char-ce to give the moatter further 9tudy and toc have a chance to dis- cuss it againi before voting. At Port 'Hope couincil Reeve R. C. Everson said that fromr the pre- liminary estimates of the costs of construction aio'ne, Port Hope, would have to p)ay between $2,200 and* $2,300 per year for 20 years just to pay off the construction de- bentures, He said operating costs would be in addition to the de- benture paymnents. H1e said repre- sentatives at counties council have been told that operating costs would probably be at the same level as the costs of operâting the jail at Cobourg, but added that that statement was as yet without Order W.Vecldingw Stationary F om lThe Orono Times * ~~jDEPT.erest that's compounded, \ f for your health The first interest of your Registered Pharmacistat lcqeua Your doctor's prescriptions wiîth professional precision ,o,. t saifeguard your Jleath.
