ORU ORONO WEEKLY TIMES (Aulwrizcd as Second Ciass mail, Post Office Depaitrnent, Ottawa) Eýýablished in 1938 by R. A. Forre-ster Roy C. Forrester - Diditor and Manager Pub3lished every Thursday at the off ice, cd publicatior Main Street, Phone 109, urono, Ontario Port Hope's B ici The appointed Board ofArbitrators has turned aside the request from Port Hope and Hope Township for a change in the method of arriving at costs for the eight municipal- ities, within the structure of the Durham District High School Area. Port Hope has complained that they are pay- ing a greater charge per student for education than is any other munîcipality wthin the school area. The complaint is valid when comparisons are, made between the participating municipalities. The reason for this fact is that Port Hope has the largest industrial and commercial assessment of any mun- icipality within the High School Area. Some municipalities have very lîttle; industrial and commercial assessment and as they are in an area which includes Port Hope they too gain the benefit of Port Hope's large industrial and com- mercial assessment. In fact, everyone in the area benefits from Port HTope's assessment. The basis on which the present levies are charged to the varîous municipalities is a sound 'and equitable one. The miii rate under the county equalize d assessment for lligh School educational purposes is most similar in al the eight municipalities. -The present system in Port Hope's view is that they do not gain the sole benefit from their high percentage of industrial and commercial assessmcnt. This is quite true. Also it is true tJhat -Port Hope has certain expenditures in servicing thieir induistrial areas and no0 one outside of Port Hope assists with these costs. Port Hope apparently feels it is ail give and no take and possibly they are to a degree right in feeling this way. It May be that it is such incidents which are now promoting the idea, at the Provincial level, of area gov- ernment which would, in this case if it encompassed the eight municipalities, eliminate any difference, for ail would share benefits and costs alike. A Golden Oppoiunity The Orono Band is providing an excellent opportunity for both boys and girls in this area to learn to play musical instruments and join a Junior Band. The band fias obtained a. qualified instructor, Mr.. A. Darcb, wbo has instructed in higb schools and bas bad years of experience witb dance, orchestras. Such an opportunity comes very seldom in conmmun- ities the size of Orono and those interested should take ful advantage of this new venture by the Orono Band. Many years of enjoymient can be had through the music field andi gaining the knowledge of playing a nusieal instrument opens thie door to this field, One must go back a good number of years to recall a similar opportunity for local would-be musicians. This era dates back to the late Mr. Andrew Knox wbo iflstructed the last Junior Band in Orono. To this date some of the members of the, parent organization are stili active. The Orono Band is to be congratulated not only in providing this opportunity for the youth of the district but also in attempting to kecp a band organization active in our municipalîty.
