I[TOUT TAGGING PROJECT TERMED SUCCESSFUL Lands and forests officers terni- ed the fish tagging project éon- dutdrecently on. the Wilmott and shelter Valley streams "suc- cessful". 'Conservation ýoificersi, biolo- gists and volunteers spent three days capturing raij'bow trout in thé two streaffs. The fish were tagged anid released after they were measureil and aged. Nortlvimberland conservation officer Vic Hlarris of Gore's Land- ing, saMd resuits of the tagginig ex- 1pedlfiin were encouraging. The w.arpi weather of the past weeli brought the rainbow trout up into th' le creeks in considerable numbers. One of the largest fish was netted -in t he> lower reaches of the Shelter Valley stream was 261/2 inches long- and weighed about eight pounds. The size of th e fîsh averaged high this year. Many were in the 20-25 inch-long range., Last year a slow spring hamp- ered the taggers. The raînbows spawned over a long peri of tume because of the weather and there were only a few 'on the spaw-ning beds at any one time. The measur-ements of the fish, ,their sex and a samiple of the scales will be studied in the la- boratory to determine how tâe rainbow population in Lake O-n- tario waters is keeping Up. fastened to the back of each fish bears the words "Ontario De- partmient of Lands and' Forests" and a serial number., Anglers landing a tagged fish are asked to return the tag' with the location of the catch and the length and weight. Information obtained this way is pieced to- gether with- data recorded on 4bbc day of tagging. The travels of Lake Ontar.-o rainbows iemains somewhat of a mystery once the fish leaves spawning streams. Eaeh spring they retui-n to the same stream. Sumrmers and winters are spent someý-where in the lake. Comnmercial fishermen on the lake catch few, if any rainbows. NEW RULES ON USE 0F CERTAIN INSECTICIDES The Ontario Department of Ag.. riculture office in Bowmanville warns that ail farmers should take note of the new regulations on the use of aldrin and dieldrin insecticides.
