H quirements may lie setting the course of education la the th future - and not the too distant future, eitlier, in Oa- di tarlo. J. R. McCarthy, the provincial deputy minister of Puiversity affairs, receatly prpvlewed goveramrent think- e: ing on a systemi in which puinpils w-ere rio longer separated hi bygrades. Pl Dr. McCarthy lias outlîned some suggestions that would i reshape and revitalize the whole secondary scliool system la hq the opinion of-The London Free Press, The idea that stu- F de.nts should stililibe ftted into pre-formed molds regard- > less of their ianate. capabilities or shortcomings would lie discarded.o For instance, Dr. McCarthy explained: "If a student lias demonstrated that lie cannoôt do matliematics leyoadW Grade 9, lie miglit as well lie allowed to drop it altogethér b to spead more time on'other areas la which lielias some capabilty and interest." It lias certainly long been evideatn tliat some studeats take aatùrally to languages and abliora mathematies, while others ýexcel la the sciences but are in- dîfferent to Eaglish and history. ni The ýdeputy ministe looks ah.ead to a noni-graded. ir system la secoadary sehools which wquld involve pupil- teaclier discussions, more ladependent studies and a great- er empliasis on tlie humanities. The necessity would im- il me-di-ately arise for universities, to revamp their entrance n requiremeats, However there is seen a need for more flex- g ib-lIity'at this level of education, too, which may well corne b with the end of Grade 13 examinations la 1968. ,ti It lias long been realized, but ney er officially recog- azedtliat students have wasted time cramming information P on subjects to which they have no aptitude and for whicli they'd neyer have application. in the future this previously f wasted time canri, e utilized in pushing ahead more qulckly la subjeets in which they have aptitude and tlirough which p tliey'll make their contribution ta society. It's an encourag- ing siga for education of worth in the future, THANKSGIVING r HOME HATit It Pay s To Tourîst camnp operators at [ectors' meeting of the Great! me ie Tourist Council 1this Cek a?ýccused the provincial gover- inent of being unfair, Representatives of the tonr&st ndus-4trý,j in the Lake.shore-Ri£ej ,ke area reported they ha'] onE, ,the best summers ever but Che ýd also had moi'e problems thaný 4her years.
