ORONO WEEKLY TiMES, TIURSDAY, -MAY 4th, 196-, ORONO WEEKLY TIMES t.AutIorized as Second Cass mail, Poet Office Departmnent, OttaâtýY) Published every Thursday at tli; offire of pubhicatioe Main Street, Phone 109, uronp, Lnaro Establisihed in 1938 by R. A. Forrester Roy C. Forrester - Edfitor and Manager Smashingq Success Sure For Expo We salute Expo '67 which opened ln, Montreai iast week. And we wisýh it ail success. We have heard of saine curmdgeniyEnglish-speaking Canadians-they must be mythical-who in current political jargon are keeping their opinions open. They are sgaid to be refusing to1 commit themiseives at this stage. If Expo '67 is a s.uccess, they will rush forward after the event to exciaim what a triumph it was for Canada. If it is a flop, they will say what a mess the French-speaking Canadians of the Province of Quebec made of it. Frankly, we expect itto be a success-and a smash- ing one. We are flot thinking of it in moneymaking terms. We are thinking of what it will do to enhance the interna- tional standing of Canada and to s4bengthen the fabric of Canadian national unîty. If those curmudgeonly English- speaking Canadians we mentioned a moment ago do exist, they are ln fact well behind the time9. The Province of Quebec is part of Canadâ. The French-speaking warp of this vast landi is as essential to Canadian identity as i5~ the English-speaking woof. The people in the Province of Quebec who championed the idea of Expo '67 from the sta'rt as a means of putting their province and its inhabitants on the map were - perhaps unwittingly - doing the same for Canada as a whole. Everybody know,9 that for the past seven or eight years there have been ýtrains between English and French speak- ing Canada. But what Expo '67 will bring homne to oulside visitors, we are sure, i5 that Canadians have been taking care of these strains in their own very Canadian way. The problems are stili short of definite resolutions. But Expu '67 is surely a declaration of f aith in Canadian tolerance and unity. It is Canadîan 'now - fot merely Quebecois. We hope, too, that the impwessive outside participa- tion in the exhibition will becs9een by Canadians of both tongues less as keeDing, up with the internatîonal Jone'ses than aý a gesture of faith and trust lu Canada. The simple fact is that few people ln the w-.,orld enjoy as high a repu- tation as te for decency,,, 1icasure and unostentatiousi.ý We did not write the above editorial. It appeared in the Christian -Science Monitor of Thursday, April 27th, We do., however, heartily endorse the sentiments express- ed ther-ýe.in, -The Oshawa Times The ig Clebrtio The celebration& for observing Canada's Centennial in the Village 'of.
