ORONO WEEKLY lIMES 1Autkorized as Second ClanP maiPo i Ofic e epaiitment, Pubhiihe4 every Thuraday aIteofieo ubia Main Street, 'i 0, urono, nao lktab1ished in 19ý38 by R. A. Forrezter Roy C. Forrester - Mdtor a.nd Mwaager The Conservatives of Ontario, headed by' John Ro- barts, have been returned again to legisiative office by the electors of the province. The Conservatives, long in office, 24 .years, extend their reign for another four years, Although the Conservatives took the big plum in the election race, the two other parties, Liberais and New Democrats, benefited by the election. The Liberais increas- ed their house representation from1 24 to 28 and the New Democrats from 7 to 20. The Conservative representation decreased from 77 to 69. An interesting note of the e lection is that forty,, new faces wiii appear in the legisliature this com,.-ing; sessiîon. Thirteen arc. Conservatives an n dUt wili beom os,,ýý.t in the position of the Governm;-entbaknet Ris bere that both opposition parties appeaxr to haveu added fire power with such men as Brown, Pitman,ý Deacon, Shulman, Buiibrook and Peacock. Many in the group have been most successful in their professions and these professions are quite diversified thus giving knowledgeabie strength ý'as weIl as numericai strengtb to the opposition. It does appear that the electorate has made its choice Wisely. It has given a decisive mandate to the Conservatîve party to govern Ontario. It bas also served warning and bolstered the opposition. CONGRATULATIONSI Congratulations are due to the local victor, Conserv- ative'incunibent Alex Carruthers, wbo successfully retained bis Durham seat in the legisiature-on Tuesday -last. Nbit- only did he retain bis seat but also încreased bis plurality over bis nearest rival, E. R. Lovekin, Liberal. __-AU, candidates in, the Durham race are to be con- gratuiated for their interest, efforts and 'the conduet of their campaigns. BIG JUM P FOR N.D.P. In this election the New Democrats, with candidate Douglas Moffat, moved into contention in the Durham rid- ing. The percentage of the Durham vote for the NDP rose far beyond the Provincial average and totaiied four-f old over the r'ecord of 1963 for Durbam.ý The increase to the NDP fold was a ioss to the Liberais and it aiso appears that the NDP picked up most of the new votes in1 the rid- ing. This latter point denotes a change from a predominent rural agricuiturai riding to an urban industriai area. THREE CANDIDATE MEETINGSý One -of the more interesting local features of the redent election campaîgn was the holding of public meet- ings, tbrougbout thie riding at whlcb the three candidates weýre guesft speak1ers. These meetings were- open for ques- tions froma the floor. Local organizations such as Chamber of Commerces, Cburcb groups etc were instrumentai in the promotion of these meetings and are to be congratulated for their efforts. In tbe past candidates beld meetings at wbicb their own supporters wouid be in attendance. The three candi- date meetings opened up discussions and we believe are much more informative. Tbey also give an opportunity to question candidates on their policies. This, we belie ve, is an improvement- and one wbich we cau look forward to ini the future.
