ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, THURSDAY, FEBRUARY lSth, 1968 Taken from a sermon preached by Rev. Basil Long. Seripture Lesson '- Phillipians 3 7-21. [t is a valuable, startling and sometimes shaking experience' to honestly ask oneself the question, "what-is the one thing in my life which takes first place, and to which all other things are subjec- tive. The Apostle Paul, writing to his fellow Christians at Philippi, said, "one, thing 1 do, forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to . what lies ahead, 1 press toward the goal for the prize of the upward eall of God in Christ Jesus." In making such a statement Paul is recognizing the fact that he is by no means a complete Christian. H1e does not mean that there is only one thing he does, rather that there is one thîng which motivates every action. Some of the other things which. seem to dominate the expression of other lives can ho found in the drive for wealth, power, pleasure or many things of a like nature. These -are not bad in themselves but wrong> when they become "the one thing" which underlies ail our act ions and decision s. Every man- is claimed by Christ for some purpose and therefore, every man must al bis )Ife press on to grasp and realize that for which he has been dlaim- ed by Christ. Paul suggests that if we are te. flccomrlish this we mnust keep our eye on the goal, keep from look- ing back to past glories, or past defeats, and then throw every en- ergy and reserve into reaching the goal. The high calling of the con- gregation and the individual is to strive te mature into, a way of life which is the expression of dedication, service, understanding and strength of character - an ex- pression of' ife wh.ich defeats narrowngss, selfishness and strife.
