Up And Dogwn The/ Book Stocks Reading Club i embers were treated to a fascinating reading experience this month when Mrs. ,Mary Rutherford. chose three of William Faulknen's short novels for study: Spotted Horses", 'Old Man" and "The Bear'. Dramatic, symbolic, with touch- es of unusal humour, these stor- ies were written by a man who did not comnplete high school. lis complex sentence structure, and powerful command of lang- uage show that a lack of formai education did not stunt this wri- ters intectual growth. Faulkner is succesful in reaching not oniy the minds, but also the emotions of his readers by usitg a style that creates a tension, almost frustrating at times. The central action in "Spotted Herses" is a pony auction; in the "Old Man"; a Misissippi flood; ini "The Bear", the hunting of OId Ben., However, underlying these accounts is deep and thoughtfui commentary on universal moral problems of Man.
