ORONO WEEKLV TI MES, THURSDAY, DECEMIBER 5th ,16 ORNO W E EK LY T1 IME S fAuhorze-as Second Clftss mk;il, Poet Office Dcpartnent, Ottawa) cublshedevey Thursd.iay at the offi , fpuiblicatiu ManStreet, EPhone 109, urorio, Ontario Estblihedir.93 by R. A. Forrester Ro .Forrester, - Edltor and Manager Thie rei t of the Monday election for two Trustees to the ýNor)ithumiberland:-Durhan- Board of Education did up- set many previous predictions. It had been stated on May occasions that Clarke Township was running too many canididates in ecimparison with Newcastle and Hope Town- ship and as a resuit it was doubtful if Clarke would eleet a member to the Board. The result of the election has the two Trustees resident of the Townshi*p, a complete reversai of ail predietions. There are maniy factors governing the outcome of any eleetion and also, the turnout at the polis. Monday's election, an election that lacked real issues, was spirited mainly by the candidates themselves. Clrke Township turnout shows a better percçntage than either Newcastle or Hope Township. This was due to the fact that Clarke had 'four candidates in the field. These candidates did stir up the pot and through them, selves and workers created a stimulater interest in the election. This interest paid off in votes. A candidate can not sit baek lacking a campaign, and expeet to always win elections. It was work and plenty of work for the wfrning candidates to swing the election in their favour. The ehoice of candidates is possibly the first factor in creating interest in eleetions. We cannot expeet the flare of Diefenhakers, Trudeaus or Kennedys but we can expect to have knowledgable, sîneere and aggressive can- didates to stimulate electioln interest. Pour and uninspired candidates will not move the electorate. Tin this area it was a good eleetion and ail candidates do deý-serve a vote of thanks ýfor their interest in education.
