The termi Emphysema is derived fromn a Greek word that'means inflation, that is, too much air in the lungs or really overinflation. There is in emphysema another important factor, namely damage or destruction of Part of the lung tissue. 'The lung changes in em- physema occur 'in the air sacs or the breathing unîts rather than in the bronchi. There is no known cause of this disease but cigarette smok- ing, air pollution, repeated lung infection, her-edity- and the -norm- al process of aging, aIl play a role ia the development of emphy- sema. Approximately ninie out of every ten people with this dis- order admit to heavy cigarette smoking. The combination of city living in an industrial area with high levels of, air pollution, along with cigarette smoking, increases the frequene>', and severity of emphysema. Most people with emphysema do have a preceding history of chronie cough and sputum of long enougli duration to warrant a diagnosîs of chronic bronchitis before the develop- ment of emphysema. The most important symptom in a person with emphysema is shortness of breath. This symptom tends to be disregarded if its early stage so when the symptom of breathlessness is reported to the physician the disease is 'already at an advanced stage. There is com-,on1y a wheezing noise comn- ing fromn the chest when the in- dividual breathes heavily, and'this refleets an associated n arrowing of the bronchial tubes. The early detection of emphy- sema is a major-problem. An cd- ucational programme aimed at informing people about the early ,-ymptoms of chronie bronchitis and cmphysema should bring the person to a physician so that steps can be taken to hait or slow down thfle progress of the disý- ease. Massý, screeniing tests have been carried out for ycarsin the tuberculosis deteetioil prograimme and qimilar projeets could be un- dertaken to. detcct emphysema and similar chronie respirator>' diseases. in many arras breathing tests are beinb performed on ap- Thé RiGHAT -WEIGHT LIGHILTWEIGHT witmoe poer boget the job.done! Main Street Orono, Ontario FINAL REGIONAL GOVERN- MENT CHOICE LIES WITII THE PEOPLE SAYS MAYOR The -final decision on regional government should lie with the people, flot Queen's Park, Mayor Bruce Mackey' of1 Oshawa said last Thursday. 11e said hle has'held this view since the Os;hawa Area Planning and Developmrent- Study began and it is heartening to see other pevople in agreement. is comment was directed to- wards the provincial Liberal party's policy committee, who ini a working paýper drawn up this week, said tlhe province should establish ,ýgfionaI goverament only if the citizens of the area want it. The >comnidittêe's3 paper argues that regional. goverilment shoul. d not be established arbitrarîly by Queen's Park but based on local motivationr, assisted, through the 'stigation of Queen's Park. MVayor Maekey sai 1 this lias ,been the, caseloçally since, the re'gional goveruman,>ýt study began and there has been opportu'nity nrovided.many times for the pub- lic to involve itself in the study's dis~cussion. "It's the responsibility of the local council to bring out talk as each study discussion papcr is re- leased," the mayor said, "so, we know where our citizens stand on the question." parentlY healthy patients as well as on selected eroups' of persons who have lung sYmptoms1 or on people who have been smaokers. A surprising number of the test- ed- individuals show an abnormal- ity at an early stage of the dis- ease when- beneficial advice can be given. There are mnethods of treat-' ment that helpý the person with emphysema - it is NOT a hopeless condition. Thie results of treat- ment are mucih- better when the dîsease is reêognized at an early st -age. In the later stages of em- physemia the person is incapaci- tateçl by ijis illness. V1ie famfly as a resuit suffers considerable -mental a¶uî.Then fthere i the drain on famtily savings, onl health insuirance funds and even- * tually on the public, tax money. So in this disease the socio-econ- Om'r impai)ct ont the patient, bis family,, the Province and munici- pality may be excessive. Prevention is, even more im- portant than treatment in the ovei-all consideration of emphy- sema. Research into the cau ses of emphysema is essential and needs greater support. Campaigns to educate the people about the harmnful effects of smoking are necessary. Community *support to control air pollution is an urgent demand in many parts of Ontario. There remains much to be learn- ed about emphysema but in the meantime most individuals with this disease can derive benefit from treatment. ItPICKLAYERS STONEMASONS ,f.
