OROO WEKLY TIMES, TIIURSDAY, MAY 6th, 1970 * ORNO WEEKLy TIMEi s eecod CabsMailRegstrLonNuab.er aOeý; Main Street, Orono, Orita,-.i. Phone 935< A WELCOMED REPORT For far too long the Province of Ontario has been groping about in economic, social and land use affairs with no definite goal or plan. The resu]lt has been a piece-meal, catch-ascatchcan variety of Policies' which have had a detrîmental effect on the rapidly growing centres of this great province. We muet welcome the submission tliis week by the Province of their "Design for Development" as the first concreçe step in setting forth a pl anned program for espec- ially' the centraî-southern portion of Ontario. As stated by Premier John Robairts it sets a pattern of developmnent in broad ternis. "We can now proceed with refinement of th.ý. transportation concept, a more precise regional land-use pattern, special policies for urban areas and economic and social goals," stated the Premier. Hie also noted that the challenges are substantial and will involve many changes and sacrifices. The design appears to align urban centres to take advantage of parallel routes of transportaition. It also is concerned over functional efficiency, decentralization, space conservation and natural resources conservation. The report this week is claimed to be only the first of a series and certainly the termis have to be expanded -O lie of benefit to the enviroiment of the proclaimed area. Municipalities must become involved in the plan and be ready to move to accomplish the.goals which have been set. V This will flot be easy in aIl cases nor will it be accepted with I open arms in others. This however, should not deter the uft- b imiate aim 4 f the program. Again we, must welcorne the report and see in'it the first real glimmer in our survival in a sane community.t GALLOP POLES w GIVE BOURASSA BIG EDGEsi The resuIt of the recent Quebec election appears to p have caughtt most opiuion poils a way off base.
