ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, THURSDAY, AUGUST 20th, 1970 ORON EEKy TI E SUPPLY AND DEMAND The teacher profession is undergoing a dramatic change in the. elementary department in regards the supply and demand for this profession. It was flot too many yenrs ago that the local Town- ship Area School Board, along with otiier boards were find- ing it mest diffi cuit to staff their pujtilic sehools.with quali- fied teachers. This has changed and today there exists a surplus of elemen'tary teachers across the Province and teacher college s are reporting that up to twenty-five per- cent of their graduating classçs are not obtaining jobs in their profession. This condition wll further mount for the next year or so as enrolment in teacher colleges this coming Septem- ber is again on the increase while enrolment in the element- ary sehools in 1971 will start a definite decrease. The fore- cast in public sehool enrolment in Sepemnber 1970 is slightly over one percent. This trend is to reverse in 1971. The surplus of teach ers will no doubt automatically place a higher sta ndard of qualifications for graduating teachers and they will be seekind the formai educ4tion of University. The Province will require in 1971 that those wishing admittance to teacher colleges must have at least one year at University. This however will not be a hardship for the surplus of teachers is already dictating greater qualifications to obtain jobs in the 'teaching pro- fession. * It is s0 'that the dictates of supply and demand are as great as those of legisiation. FTS GOOD ENTERTAINMENT * The Orono Youth Theatre will complete its produc- tion of plays on August 30th. With the three plays the group of eighty teenagers under professional, direction and professional coaching have provided fine, entertainmient. The city critiies have given the venture and the plays good revues and especially with Dark of the Moon. Indians from the viewpoint of the pros has met with some criticismn but ths does not take away from this extravaganza on the giant thrust stage at Orono arena. The audiences have been enjoying Indians and it quite likely will outdraw the other two plays. It is an entertaining production, having a lot of life, a story and humnour. This ýplay and Dark of the Moon are not heavy productions. They are most entertain- ing. 'rhere are but ,a few days left -and we would like to encouirage you to be part of the ventiiire in Orono. Counties of- Northumberland and Durham Rond Department painted new park ing lines on the Main Street. At the saine time parrellel park- ing was instituted on the east s_,de insteaýC. of the former angle parking. The meve to parrellel parking, on the east side has net been popular with the Orono business, men as it has decreased con sider- ably the number of cars that have been able te park on tis particu- lar side when angle parking was, in effeet. We have yet te hear any one in total faveur of the pre- sent plan. It' has also been pointed eut that net only has there been a bass of parking space but with ne enforcement of the by-law and fS.ýe two heur parking limit fur- ther h;Frdshipsý are caused by long time parking vehicles.
