-- - -~ - .r- ~r~% ORONO WEEKLY TIMR. WEDNESDAY. JUNE 23rd. 1971 OIONOWEEKLY TIMES A fervent Desire May Destroy The fervent desire te enhance our environment and control pollution could, in'some cases, do harm beyond that that exists now tbrough litter and debris. The word pollution, now used in general terms, covers, what one may describe as litter. as well as undesirable foreign material in the air and water which destroys its use for mankind. It has been rewarding to see an attitude develop in which people in general are concerned over the matter of pollution. This cencern has lifted the governments to take action and many groups are now organized to combat the problem created through the standard of living enjoyed by man himself. One particular project 'eý.ich we might question at the pres- ent time is one being undertaken by an 'Opportunity Youth Group from Durham College. We do net queýtiorn their drive nor their con- cern for the Oshawa Creek but rather theextent to which they are pushing the projeet. Certainly ail man-made matter as the common beer bottie, cans, old appliances and such litter should be removed from the creek bed and this we commend. We do question the act of remov- ing stones and bolders, natural brush that build-up natural log dams. These are the natural aspects of the creek which in nature's way controis the flow of water. To remove ail the naturai obstacles in a creek with a good flow ef water is only to gý-stroy it. The spring floods then gain mo- mentum to carve eut new courses and to excavate the bed of'the stream. It couid well change the nature of the entire creek. One of the reasons stated in t he press for the total dlean-up and removal of ahl obstacles from the Oshawa creek was se that an annuai. canoe race could be held without dangz of doing damage, te the canoes. This corner believes that here again we bend nature for our own cause and it matters littie for what reason we dothis. To use the creek as an open seweror an open channel of water for a canoe race. Might it net be better te carry the canoe over a few obstacles? Orono PeeWee Basebali $aturday, June 19, Orono at Deseronto.
