The championship is cxpected to draw approximately 400 con- testants from North America and Sweden. The eleven man Swedish team will arrive in Newcastle Friday afternoon, ed wîll !,ecture as an assembly of tie Clarke High School students. As well as participants from Ontario and Quebec, there will he contingents of the United States Marines from Camp Pen- dieton; Quantîco, Virginia; Fort Benning, Georgia; Camp Lajeune, North Carolina, and Fort Beau- voir, Virginia. The United States Army will be represented by a team from Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The meet will be opened by Russell C. Honey, the Liberal M.P. for Northumberland. On Saturday niglit there wiIl be a 'banquet at the Newcastle Town Hall. Mr. Honey, Alec Carruth- ers, MPP for Ncýthumberland, Mr A., Strike, Chairman of the Northumberland - Durham County Board of Education, and Mr. F. Thom, Director of Education for the Northumberland and Durham. Gounty -Board of Education will be present.- 'At the banquet the winners of the relay section of the meet 'v,41 be presented with their prizes. Sunday, competition in 22 cnt- egories, based on age and ability will take place. The youngest reg- istered entrant is 10 years old, and the oldest is 65., The mjeet will wind, up with an invitation only competition clinie which will be held at Clarke High School on Monday. The work of preparing the course for this international meet has been going on since last Ap- rul. Most of. the work involved has been dont, by Mr. Lars Carlson, of Bowmanville, in co-operation with Mr. R. Lowry Sr of lNew- castle. Mr. Lowry is the president of the Clarke Orienteering Club. Mr. Carlson, a geography' and physical education teacher. at Clarke High Sehool, is both a vet- eran at orienteering and a design- ing and laying out championship courses. Last ycar he was respon- sîble for laying out -the course used lu the National Champion- ships of the U.S. Marines. Orienteering, which is gaining in popularity in North America, may be part of the 1976 Olymp- ics on an experimeutal basis.' Canada expeets to select a'Na- tional team for this eveut lu the coming year. Members of the Swedish Nat- ional Team will lecture ou the sport ut surroundiug high schools and universities inthe area after- the meet.
