ORONO WJ~EKLY TIMES, WEDNESDAY, (J ICTO~ER 2Oth, 1971 ORONOWEEKLY TIMES Wbi.devery 1'karad at the fflm of pb1e."ep M"aia &toOreme, Oe ".Pbee fla3013 NOW UP TO YOU- The decision of the, Provincial electioin now rests in the desires and hands of the electorate. The priviiege to make this choice cornes oniy once every four years. It is the duty of every c 'itizen to voice their opinion at the polis which open on Thursday, Octobeir 21 from the hours of 9:00 a.m. in the morning and continue open until 8:00 o'clock ln the evening. Ail too.often we sit, back and let someone else make the' choice. Governments are rareiy elected in this country by a majority of the electorate but rather by the majority of those who vote and at times this can be as low as fifty percent of those entitied to, vote. In Durham County the voters wili make their selec- lion from an excellent group of candidates representing the three major parties, Conservatives, Liberai and New Demo- crats. The candidates, locally, should now be well-known to the electorate and it is more than likely that the choice has been made even if subconsciously. Mr .Carruthers, Mr. Moffatt and Mr. Russell have ail waged an energetic cam-, paign in an effort to place their party poiicy before the elec- torate. The candidates, the policies and.the issues have been piaced b efore you. It is now your choice to eiect your man or your party (depending on how you see) to the legisiature in Toronto for the Province of Ontario. We are sure we will not ail agree on the choice thaï is to bc made, But lets ail play a choice on that decîsion by voting on Thursday. LETS NOT BE DIVIDED Slowiy but, surely it appears that the Provinces are whittling away at, the rights and areas of authority of the Federal Government of Canada. Last week bothi the Ontario and Aibe.rta, Provincial governments announced that they wouid be setting up government offices in Washington as to -the extent mnost often claimed. If the prov-inces are con- U-nited .States. It is quite in accord with thie provnce to endieavour 4,c stimulate tracie for their home industries and to gain recognition for the tourist trade. Washington is certainiy flot a centre for industry or for tourist trade in resppctto Oýntario. It would appear that the provinces are looking for a bigger voice in International affairs which is directiy the respônsibility of the Federai governrnent. International reiationships may at this time be some- what strained between the U.S. and Canada but we feel not to the extent most 'often claimed. If hie provinces are con- cerned by international relationships they couid wel strenigthen Canada's hand by working through the Cana- dia government in Ottawa rather than, sending more civil servants to gad about the streets of Washington producing thorns for Ottawa. Canada today is in need of its strength and this can oniy corne when ail governments are pulling in the saine direction at the saine time. There is no'doubt that -no one has ail the answers but co-operation should be a keyword in Canada today:.- WHIO KNOWS? This week on the street in Orono we were- asked just when Hallowe'en was being observed. It falis on 'Sunday but our enquirer fplt it would be much ýwiser if it wasF heid on Saturday evening. This opinion we had also heard some- time- ago but feit at that tirne the mater wouid naturally take care of itself. But no here it is alnm4st Saturday or Sunday and no one, seems to know the answer. We imagine this is just another time we will ieave the answer to the youngest generation or perhaps sorneone knows a friendly ghost, witch or gobirn. ARDA HELPS PEOPLE!
