Hove Abifity T. Produceý "The farmers of Canada have an amazing ability to produce, in fact to overproduce," Ontarîýo Federation of Agriculture Presi- dent Gordon Hill told 400 dele- gates to the Federation annual convention in Hamilton on Mon- day. "I picture our agriculture as a high-powered automobile, run-. ning at haîf speed. It's temrnting to step on the gas just a ouch, but when we do that, the vehicle accelerates too quickly, throwing us out of control."' 1Hll, reelected to a second term of office as President at the 1971 Federation convention, gave the welcoming address on the. first day of the thiree-day policy-mak- ing con vention. "It was our efforts to regulate this ability to over-produce that resulted in ne of the most divis- ive issues hat ever bit' Canadian farmers," "Hili said. "National marketing- legisiation -became a barrier separating the farmers of tbis land into hostile factions. Pol- itical opportunistsà used the legis- lation to misinform and mislead farmers, to fan farmers' discon- tent and. to embarass the federal government. Perllaps mercifully, the govern- ment slid the bill under the car- pet, allowing farmers to 'patch up their differences." But llI told the federation del- egates that the problem of over- capacity was still present. "The farmers of Canada still need some kind of, co-ordinating structure for provincial. marketing boards." Speakiig -of the low incomes of Canadian farmers. 1Hil1 said. "'Our young people are laig the farms in droves._ They -see 'thef kindof income s that farmers cý arn aind, they want nio part of if.
