Educators, parents and stud- ents are now increasingly aware of the excellent "teaching aids" becoming a'vailable ail the time. However, it is dfifficult to keep up with al the new develo-nments. They Are Conrerned About Alcohoism Recent ne spaper items have indicated that civic officiais are concerned wlth alcoholismn and other problems among local teen- agers. Thèse items also tend f0 infer that, not enough concern is being shown by educators. Mr. Glenn MacLeod, Supei'n- tendent of instruction, for the Northumberland and Durham County Board of Education, 'today informed local officiais of the work o! the "Human Growth and Development Council." His report explains that in 'an effort to- "Hasten Slowly," and't.0 build a solid foundation, the Council, bas deiberately avoided "fanfare" and "undue publicity."' Mr. MacLeod stresses that there are many areas of concern, wbich should not býe ",sepairately pack-, aged." The key' to the problem is an integrated approach, which is exactly the objective of the Council. The- Human Growth and De- velopment Council is composed o~educators, and representatives from such fields as law, medie- îne the ministry, business and in-- dustry and parents and students. Department o! Education spec- ialists are working with the Council to prepare a curriculum for use from Kindergarten to Grade 13. More than one hundred teachers are attending training sessions with these officials. The YM.C.A. and service clubs are eo-operating with the council in providing ideas and opportunities for community projects. O.M.B. NOW APPROVES SEWAGE EXTENSION FOR PORT HOPE It took the Ontario Municipal Board ail o! two minutes Feb. 16 t0 reverse its decision on the doubling of the capacity at the- Port Hope sewage treatmnent plant. No ýobjectors to the extension showed up at the hearing in the town hall, which appeared to be. mierely a formality. It took a littie less than an hour to convince the 0MB that a, previous decision, in November, refusing to permit the town to go alîead with the extension, was wrong. In November the board's re- fusal was based on the vîcw that, Port Hope was "overly optimistie", ln its estimates of popù1atýn growth and that the town's pro- jection for industrial develop- ment "'represents more hope than filet." Advisory Groups The Ganaraska Conservation Authority bas taken the lead froin other authorities in the province and bas appointed "out- siders" to sit on three advisory boards. At the annual meeting in the Port Hope town hall, Mrs. Bar- bara Smith,. secretary-treasurer, said that other authorities have been operating with advisory boards for a number of ycars. R. J. W. Scuithorpe and Jack Fir"y)',-ion of Port IHope were - pointed an, advisory board daý ing, with natural-îsý->> Alan Dines of Hamilton town- ship and Stewart McKay of Clarke will serve on the Conser- vation area board and Richard Lovekin of Newcastle and Hl.
