OflONO WEEKLY TIMES, WEDNESDAY, MAY 17, 1972 ORONO WEEKLY TIMES ORGAN DONATIONS: A SELFLESS OPPORTUNITY The- eye bank is emptY. Surgeons transplanted the last two sigt-giving corneas last week. But the bank's insolvency is not unusual.' The eye- bankers at. the Canadian .. ational Institute for the Blnd frequently have n~o assets. Meanwhile, about 45 persons in Ontario now wait in darkness for a tiny share of the eyes that go every week into eternal darkness of the grave. Another 350 or so Ontarians need new kidneys. The nuniber of those who need kidneys is growing faster than the supply of these organs, so artificial kidney facilities are being overtaxed. Mayor William Denmison's recent an- nouncement that hie and his wife Dorothy will offer their vital organs when they die was thus a noble and generous act. At 67, the mayor can usefully donate probablyonly his corneas. But his gesture has alreadyprompted younger persons to make similar decisions. And rightly so; death may take our friends, but it should not deny the living of the organs that can bring them health and happiness. Last year Ontario's law was changed to allow any adult to give binding consent for the use of his body or its parts after death. Before, distraught relatives could overrule the deceasted's wishes. They can still give the con- sent after his death if hie failed to do so wvhile living, so long as they have no reason to believe hie would have obeicted. Already the eye bank distributes consent forms to donors of eyes. But there should be in wide use a universal donor form to cover whatever donations an individual right care to make. Ontario should step in to devise an appropriate con- sent formi and distribute it through the media, or attach it to the health insurance cards that almost everyone carnies. An elaborate legal document is not necessary under the law-merely, it appears, a simple statement-but the lay- mnan will feel more sucure with a sanctioned f on of words to sign. A common document will be easy to spotÊ quickly. And varjous organizaticils stand ready to pubhîcize it. This would encourage people to, take a selfles s op- portunity that comes .only once in a, lifetime. We believe it would meet a generous' response, enhancing the quality of health and citizenship in this province. -The Toronto Star Vacation Week- End S ecials FILM CX-126-12, prieed....... onlY 99c ASSORTED COLOURS PAPER PLATES, 100, - 9" .......... 99 BARBEQUE OR Well Insulated OVEN'ý MITS, Pr ................. 88se OVAL LA VIN WOOD STEAK BOARD....... .......... 99e Size 10x17 IIIBACIII - CAST IRON ..... $7.99 TWO-SIDED ON STAND SIIAVING MIRROR - 5"............ 77e 1000 IIOURS - 40, 60, 100 Watt 2 in pkg.
