This has now bÏeen confiraned by the gov- erfnent, and arrangements have been made te appoint a new clerk to replace Mr. William Austin who retired as of December 31. Report The Newcastle Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police in- vestigated the following motor vehicle collisions and. occurrenc- es between December l7th and, December 23rd, 1972. The accident rate for the past week was very high with 40 motor vehicle accidents investi- gatçd, including 2 accidents in- volving, snowmobiles, une of which was fatal, Fourteen persons suffered per- sonal inju-ry, and as a result 14 peýrson1s arne chiarged -wîth dIrivingý oJffencesý including 2 criminal code drivinig offences. On> December'17, 1972 at 1:45 a.1m. a ýnowmobile northbotrnd on the Oshawa-Dariington Town line collided wk4h a parkcd car ap- proximately one-haif mile north of eHwy. 2. The driver of the snowmobile was instantl[y killed. ,Since Januar 1972, 3 persons were killed on, snowmo-, Newcastle Detachment area as a resuit of colliding with parked vehicles. This is a good indica- tion reflecting the dangers of op- eratîng- a snowmnobile on public roads. The, Newcastle officiers aiso completed 66 genieral investiga- fions of which 3 w ere break, en- ter and theft, 7 theft, 3 wilful damage complaints, 1 trespassing report, 2 disturbances, 1 assault, 2 domestic complaints, and 1 mis- sing person report. Two occur- rences involved the recovery of stolen property, also there wiere 2 reports of lost property and 1 report of found propertv. The two meni were arrested'and charged with break, enter and theft, of varlous cottag- es in the Newvcastle area, which occurred within the past few' months. Employees of the Esso Hwy. 401, service centre gas bar. east of Newcastle arc on strike. aLid picket uines have been set up at the entrance te, the Service Çen- tre. On Friday, December 22, 1972 several reports werc receiv- ed that strikers at the Se~rvice Centre were damaging ýcars of notorists who were crossing the picket lines. One of the strikers is charged with intimidationas a resuit of the damage and forcibly obstructing the right of motorists to pass. On December 23, 1972 at Z,30 a.m. a youth from. Newcastle was arrested near Orono on Hwy. 35 when found la possession of a ar stolen from Orono. A report received dn December 23, 1972 revealed, that break. onft- r and theft occuried at a farm ouse east of Pontypool between >ecember 18th 'and' 23rd, 1972.
