Lennox of the Livestock Branch of the Department of Agriculture in speaking at the Clarke Library on Wednesday stated that all too often the feeding of supplements is a waste of time and money. He said tht the digestive system of a horse is unique and as a rule supplies all the require- ments to the body. In speaking of supplements he stated that if more than required is feed (and it often is) the animal excretes the surplus. He also out-lined the procedure to following in preparing a balanced diet for a horse and felt that horsemen could save money preparing their own feeds rather than purchasing prepared feeds. Those in attendance were told of the many services available to them through the Department of Agriculture and these services included formulas to arrive at a balanced feed for horses as well as testing of manures and other items in studying the health of the animal. EASTERN BREEDERS 25th ANNUAL MEETING Two hundred members and visitors of. Eastern Breeders Inc., Kemptville, Ont. attend- ed their 25th Annual Meeting held in the Engineering build- ing of Kemptville College of Agricultural Tèchnology. Guest speaker, Dr. Doug Morrison, Chairman of Anim- al and Poultry Science at Guelph, Ontario presented his views on the future of Agricul- ture. He said the consumer has never been better fed, nor does the consumer really desire that the farmer pro- duce food at less than a reasonable profit level. Still on the food supply he indicated that in his opinion there is no apparent link between animal products and heart disease. His observations are that marketing plans tend to narr- ow the interests of individuals and production efficienéy cou- Id suffer. The A.I. industry rests on research like many other agriculture areas, and to keep the emphasis on improv- ed production research you must add your voice to direct dollars that way. Dr. R.G. Smily, General Manager of E.B.I. Genetic Centre said: although 1972 was not a good year financially for E.B.I., it was a rather successful year in other respects, in that there was a substantial increase in services within the E.B.I. service area (some 7,000 cows) and even under the mentioned circumstances, a high level of Semen Sales was maintained. The potential for increase in business is greater in the E.B.I. area than any other in the Province.
