It is a progressive move, and we hope the government takes another one by finding a less cumbersome way of administerinig the rebate than by mailing a cheque te each farmer in the FM esidorses the tax-free teft of Up te $50,000 that fermera "Il be able to give once during their lifetimes, and the abolition of succession duties on farms transferred within the family. "These tax breaks, coupled with Finance Minister John Turner's pro- mise to postpone capital gains tax as long as the farmn is worked by the immediate family, will make it easier to pass farms from father to son. "Farmers, through their Federation, have been work- îng for these- changes for a long time., They are both needed, and welcomed.1' Hilîs adds, "The way to keep young people, in farming is tbrough increased income. Tax measures are important, but young men will not stay on the farn if their farm income is flot comparable to what they would earn in other occupa- tions." Although Hlill ýsays that farmers are pleased, with mnany aspects of the budget, they are concerned over the seven per cent. tax n energy. "This will increase the cost of hydro, propane, gasoline, and diesel fuel used in crop production, and push operating costs Up. "This is an invasion into a new tax field. In the past, food production bas been tax- exempt. Farmers fear this is the thin edge of the wedge. " Durharn Agri-news Bob Watt, Assoc. Agricultural Representative SOME TIMELY TIPS FOR APRIL GARDENERS: -April is the month. that avîd gardeners look forward to, a month when they can get out and start work on flower beds, and lawn. R.F. Gomme, horticultural specialist, Ont- ario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, offers these sug- gestions. Soul should be fairly dry when you start work on flower beds. Cultivate lightly and remove dead plant material. Some flower beds may need to be dug up and organic material such as rotted man- ure or peat moss added. A complete garden fertilizer could also be added now. Don't remove the mulch from tender plants until al risk of a damaging frost has passed. Loosening the mulch with a garden fork will help to dry the soul underneath. Wait until your lawn is fairly dry beforê you roll it, since rolling when it is too wet wiII only compact the soul. A lawn fertilizer should'be spread juist before active growth takes place to promote a thick, healthy lawn. If there are patches that must be seeded or sodded, do this now, so that the new grass will be well established before the sum- mer. Roses can be pruned after mid-April. Hybrid teas and floribundas can be pruned- back to within 8 inches of the soil surface. Remove any broken canes or deadwood from climbers and shrub roses. KNOW THE LAW -"-STOP SIGNS": Some motorists roll past a Stop sign, with the thought in mimd that they may save a few seconds, when actually such a bad habit often results in a Serious accident. Persons fail- ing to bring their vehicle to a complete and full stop upon apprahng a Stop sign, will bechagby the police. The fine for such offence is $20.00 to a maximum of $10)0,00.
