No skating on thin ice in future Assurance was given last Thursday at a regular meeting of the Durham Central Agricultural Society that there was no threat to the existance of the fairgrounds in Orono nor, the Fair building which is used during the winter months as an ice arena. There was some speculation advanced at a meeting of the Orono Amateur Athletic Association over a week ago that there was a move afoot to close out the fairgrounds in Orono and to get rid of the fair building. In this matter a delegation from the Athletic Society attended the recent Agricultural Society meeting. They were assured that no immediate consideration was being given to closing out the fairgrounds in Orono. The president of the fair board, E.R. Lovekin, outlined his views in the matter but did assure the delegation that if anything ever was considered in the matter of selling the property that the Athletic would certainly be considered. The general concensus of the membershiD of the Agricultural Society was that nothing would be done toward the sale of the property and that the fair would continue to operate and be promoted at the Orono site. Mr. Carlos Tamblyn outlined the operation of the fair in Orono and strongly advocated that it would not be moved from the present location. A motion presented by Mr. Tamblyn passed without oppostion in which it was stated that to clear up the issue now and also in the future that no action was to be considered in moving the fairgrounds from Orono. Mr. Roman Opoka, president of the Athletic Association stated following the meeting that he was well pleased with the outcome of the meeting. He did state tþat he would endeavour to have the Association set-up a fact finding committee in regards to the possibility of making major alterations at the present arena or the possibility of constructing a new arena. He said he had advocated this previously but that the idea had been turned down. He felt there was many who now felt something should be done to improve arena facilities in the area. There has been some consideration given unofficially of rebuilding the south portion of the present arena so as to provide a large ice surface and further supporting services. Mr. Opoka referred to the need for better parking facilities as well as better ice surface. It was pointed out that other centres were construct- ing new arena and that some fact finding is certainly necessary in the area.
