The success of tree planting is dependent to a very great extent upon weather condit- ions during and immediately after planting., We had an early spring this year and so were able to begin planting ahead of our usual schedule. Since plantîng be- gun in early April, the weather has been generally cool and wvet thus giving young trees a littie more time to adapt to their new growing sites before the bot dry weather begins. During the dry weather it is often the case that no amonn planting is enough to, save freshly planted seedlings from drought. Our spring planting is now finished and the mo.st criticial weather period is over, how- ever, it would stîli be a tremendous advantage to the survival of new plantations if we were to get two or three more weeks of cool wet weather. In the Lindsay District there were over one million trees planted, for the most part on abandoned farma land. A number of species inclucling red pine, white spruce, bass- wood,, Doplar, ash, silver maple iand liirch made ut) the enough to accomodate ail the different experiments that the Ministry's Waste Manage ment Branch plans to conduct plus new ones that are certain to materialize as plant pro- cedures develop. It should also be emphasized that despite the experimental label we are giving this plant, it is intended that it will be a working unit with the capabil- ity of recovering substanial quantities of reusable raw material from the incoming waste, Mr. Auld emphasized.
