LIBRARY IMPROVEMENT 19TUDY SHOWS "URGENT PIROBLEMS" The schooi board is consid- ering the improvemnent of library facilities in United County schools. A feasibility study conduct- ed by administration detailed the "urgent problems" at mnany schools and urged that portable classrooms should be bought or relocated for schools which had poor library facilities., The report suggested new portables should be bought for Cavan South Public School, Cavan North Public School, George Hamilton ]Public School, Baltimore Public Sehool and Cook's Public School. The report said if there was an, increased enrolment at North Hope Central public school it would be necessary to place a class in the room now being, used as a library. In the Western area, the report said the library, at C artwright High School was being housed in a room whicb was also used for classes. The portable classrooms which would become vacant when grades 7 and 8 move from Central School to the old Bowmanville High School could not be used for libraries as they would have to be held for anticipated increased en- rolments at Cartwright Cent- ral, Orono and Newcastle. The report suggested that the. portable at Sunsbine Heights should be moved to a site on the Dale Road Senior Public School. property to ARCHIE GROTH is the Service Manager at MacDon- aid Ford here in Bowmanville. Gummow Sehool to allow more room at Merwin Greer. In the Eastern area littie change was needed in library facilities though South Cramahe sehool library was a bit small and poorly lighted. D.W. Patterson said the library situation was "Critical in some schools but there would probably be some difficulty moving portable as there were only two organiz- ations in Ontario who could do it. Af ter a lengthy discussion the board decided to refer the report back to administration for further study, partîcularly in relation to estimated cost and priorities. Guide JUDGE SPEAKS TO GRADUATING DURHAM STUDENTS A total of 174 students, Durham College's largest graduating dlass ever, receiv- ed their graduation diplomas and certificates at the fifth annual convocation held Thursday, May 24, at the Oshawa Civic Auditorium. Robed.for the occasion in ceremonial gowns, the grad- uates came from many points in and beyond Ontario and Durham Counties. The guest speaker for the occasion was the Hon. Mr. Justice Patrick Galligan of the Supreme Court of Ontario. Music was 'provided by the Oshawa Civic Band. The graduates were intro- duced to the dignitaries, families and friends in atten- dance by Jack Davidson, Chairman of Technology, Fred Haywood, Chairman of the Business Division, and Blair Haviland, Acting Chairman of Applied Arts. They received their diplomas and certificates from Lister R{obinson, Dean of Academic Affairs of the College. In bis address, Mr. Justice Patrick Galligan referred to the motto of the College "Excellence through Perse- Verance". "Tha t motto sets a standard of excellance, not merely for the College, by particularly for its graduates", hie said. "Lt is through its graduates that an institution of education is judged". "If you graduates, as you travel through your lives, demonstrate excellence in the manner in which you live your lives, then the standard which the founders set for this college will be obtained and it will pass the examination of time". Mr. Justice Galligan stated that students of today were far more realistic about the CATHMAR WFTell Drilling. Poverty, frat- ernal wars, racial conflicts, the plight of our native people, inflation, a spiralling cost of living, polluti6n, and depletion of our national resources were all described as problemns whicb' the students must realize and would have to live with and solve. But in giving the country needed new direction, Mr. Galligan emphasized that the answer was not that of the anarchist wýho throws away the good with the bad, but in a solution wbich preserves the benefits attained by the bard and dedicated work of many thousands of people who have gone before us. The convocation speaker cballenged Durham students to seek improvement and to seek a better future in the realistic belief that man-made problems can be solved by men and women witb the will to attain solutions to them. The Ontario Supreme Court Justice left the graduates witb a quotation, not from .a statesman, philosopher, judge or educator, but a thought expressed by a great profes- sional athieýte, Maurice Rich- ard.
