Mr. Bradshaw is one of Canada's leading horticultur- alists and is well known through his radio and televis- ion programs. He prepared the easy ta understand guide for Canadian Industries Limit- ed and it is available free from, CIL lawn and garden products dealers. Gardeners prune and clip ta remove dead, damaged or diseased parts; ta eut away weak spindly grawth and Sa, produce a more vigorous plant; and ta have shapely- looking plants and hedges, according ta the guide. "Don't be afraid ta prune, after ail, you learn by your mistakes, and if you foliow this basic guide,, you won't make many of those," Mr. Bradshaw points out. "Start with a gaod set of pruning shears. Keep them clean, sharp and in alignment. Wipe them dlean after use, and put a spot of ail on them occasionaily. Blunt shears can produce torn, ragged, bruising cuts which lead ta diseased plants. . WORLD OF RAESULTS/ Cîrcu's coming to Orono f ridlay/ On Friday, dune 22nd the sounds of animais, gaily painted trucks andmen buisly erecting the tents of the Royal Bras. Performing Military Ponies fromi the Frazier Ranch in. Okiahomna, Michael's Mess of Mutts and the antics of Monkey M\oon- shines, are always crowd pleasers., Many nationalities are represented - there are Suth America's Lang's Chigi- panzees; The Juggli ng Rosi tas from Mexico City: Frank< Naîll's Rodeo Performiing Bra- hma Bull, from Wichita, Kansas and' the Reizarf Sist- ers aerial ballet, direc--t from Germany. 0f course no circus would be complete vvithout clowns and you'll laugh at some of spangie lands inerri- est mirth-makers under the Royal Bras. Big Top. It's A live, ail in persan and it's budgeted ta everyane's packet book. "Always mnake your cut about 14" above a bud and the bud should be facing out from the centre of the growth. This keeps the plant shape open. "Ail eut stems over one inch in diameter should be protect- ed with tree-wound paint. "An unpruned hedge boîts skyward, and soan becomes full of holes. If you have holes in the hedge, they will neyer f111 in. The solution is to cut al the hedge down to six inches in early spring before the buds start to swell andi open. Feed the hedge with CIL 'Rose Doctor' and prune it regularly This hedge, and ail young hedges should be pruned or clipped wider at the botton than at the top. Keep the top low. and ail sideshoots trimm- ed until the hedge thiekens up. "One season' of neglected feeding or pruning can lead to thin patchy hedges. Then you'll have ta eut them back to six inches and start ail over again. Early b loomçrs like Forsy- thia and Almond should be pruned immediately after blo- oming. Summer bloomers should be prunea in April- before the buds start ta swell and open. Prune ail flowering shrubs ta preserve the natural shape. Remove or shorten any str- aight sueker-like branches. Remove ail vigorous curving branches. Evergreens don't need much pruning - except ta preserve the natural shape. Prune at the end of dune when evergreens finish growing. Cut back the new seasan's growth by one haîf.
