According to Mr. Martin Manders of Kendal and president of the Associa- tion some 10,000 are expected to attend the annual event. This is the first time the show lias been held in Orono having first been in Cobourg in 1965 and for the remaining years in Campbellford. Exhibits in the show which will cover most of the fair grounds willdate back to the early 1880s and will be all in operation. The shingle mills and planning mill all date back to this early date and will be seen iii operation on the grounds. Threshing machines and sawmills from an early date will also be in operation as they were in days gone by. Big steam engines from the era of 1905 to 1925 will also be a part of the show as they advance along under their own steam and power. In this category it is expected that some twenty machines will be on exhibit to view and see in operation. Interest in the show from an exhibitors standpoint is from all across eastern Ôntario starting east of Toronto and well past the Kingston area. The show will also feature antique cars and an inside display of household antiques by the ladies auxiliary of the Association. This in itself is and outstanding feature and well worth the price of admission itself. The range of items is quite wide and interesting. The suggestion of the motion was brought before the Trustees by R. Forrester who stated that the Township had given an option to the Senior Citizens group of all the lands north of the old railway tracks purchased in 1967 as a nature and park area. The lands were purchased at that time as a Centennial project and were turned over to the Oron Park Board for administration a- long with other lands to the south as well as the Orono Park property. The trustees had no object- ion to the old dump site being sold for a Senior Citizens development but did feel that the Municipality should retain the ownership of the valley lands and the roadway along the western bank of the valley lands. Mr. Partner said he felt this portion of land should rem'ain in public ownership and be developed as land open to use by the general public. ORONO WEEKLY TIMES, August ist, 1973 Will run for downtown seat Mr. Ken Lyall of Newcastle bas made his intentions known that he will be a candiate in the forthcoming regional election for what he described as the "Lown Town Job" the upper tier regional seat. Mr. Lyall stated that now being a member of the County School Board does not hinder him running for a seat on the regional council. He said if he is successful he will resign his seat on the School Board. Mr. Kirk Entwisle informed this office on Monday that he would definitely be a candidate for the lower tier of governmentto represent the Clarke-Newcastle ward in the Municpality of Newcastle. Mr. Entwisle is currently deputy-reeve in the Clarke Township council and is the only person so far to definitely state that he will be seeking office to the lower tier of government. Other candidates seeking office have indicated that they will seek election to the upper tier of regional government. Planning board to present plan At a recent meeting of the Clarke Township Planning Board it was decided that they would hold a Public Meeting to present the revisions and to discuss the entire Official Plan proposal with the general public. It was felt that there were sufficient changes to the plan as it had been presented sometime ago and that the public should be aware of these changes before the proposal is presentea to counciland finally the ministry. The Board set the date of August 15th for the meeting which will be held in Orono Town Hall. R. Forrester said he also felt the same way and as this property was within the boundaries or partly within the boundaries of the village that the Trustees should be interested to what happens in the future of this land. Hope dump comes under ministry fire and is much larger than his present machine. Many of those who will be showing in the show, he said have corne up through the ranks or have taken up the challenge of Association. The other picture show a few other machines which will be on display thfs w eek-end at the fairgrounds iii ,rono. running the machines as a hobby. Martin claims he has always owned a steam engine and it looks as if he will continue his interest in this field as well as with the Be sure to take a few hours to visit the show in Orono this week-end which will have added features on being the inclusion of a band from Campbellcroft. Following an inspection of'ý the Hope Township dump, Mr. Frank Iliffe regional engineer with the provincial waste management branch, inform- ed Hope council that their dump was not being operated in accord with provincial regulations and that the dump site had outlived its usefulness During the course of the discussion Mr. Ilffe did sug- gest that council negotiate with CPR regarding the use of their proposed development in the Township. Mr. Ilffe did also suggest that a new site be found and that this department would assist in this but'mentioned it would be the onus of the Townshi'p to prove the envir- onment suitability of the site, such as that held for CPR. The engineer stated that on the last two visits to the dump he had found it burning and it appeared as if the last fire was started through the use of an old tire. He aiso, said that the operator had been scavenging copper from rubber coated wire which is not permitted through provincial regulations Deputy-reeve Banister said this was ridiculous when such resources are needed or will be needed by our children. Mr. Ilffe also stated that on his last visit that the dump was surrounded-on three sides by water. At one point after being told that people in Hope were concerned over the establishment of dumps in the area he suggested the matter be handed back to the people to see what they could come up with to handle the problem (Continued page 6) FAIR BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE The Durham Central Agri- cultural Society which pro- motes its fair in Orono each year now has available is 1973 prize list. Partner at Tuesday meeting asked the Trustees when the fountain would be completed. He said he would very much like to have it completed before the holiday weekend when the Antique Steam Shown was in full swing at the Orono Fair grounds. R. Forrester stated it was all ready except for the installation of the pump and the coloured light. Mr. Partn- er stated he would have the pump installed shortly and Mr. Pearce, Hydro manager, said he was awaiting the lights which he would endeavour to have in Orono as soon as possible. The major changes to the plan are in the Estate Residential'section where limitations in the number has been removed and where it is now not essential to develop under a plan of sub-division. There is also future consideration for residential development below Highway No. 2 between Newcastle and Newtonville. Other changes are of a minor nature but will affect the conduct of the plan in the Township. Further particulars will be advanc- ed in regards the meeting. The public will not be furnished with copies of the plan prior to the meetings. Orono disposal area must operate proper The Orono Liarbage uumnp, is so to speak, on probation. Mr. D. Simpson, chairman of the Orono Police Trustees, stated that the Ministry of the Environment, Air Pollution Branch, had inspected the dump site and had asked that it be cleaned up and operated properly. Mr. Simpson stated that if this request was not carried out the Trustees were liable from a fine of $2,000.00 He also stated that he felt that the Trustees were not getting the support they deserved from the operators. Mr. Simpson also stated that the dump had been cleaned-up and that proper burning pits had again been established. This allows the Trustees to burn garbage at the dump providing the proper proce- dures are followed. He said that two loads of waste veneer wood is to be placed in the burning pit first, then covered with the weekly garbage and topped with a further two loads of veneer wood and burned. Mr. Simpson said that if this procedure is followed they would have no trouble with the ministry. We don't want to be faced with a $2,000.00 fine,.he said. Mr. Simpson stated that'the operators of the dump were not following his orders and requested that Mr. Tennant sign the agreement, which he had never done, and agree to carry out the proper proce- dures. Mr. Partner was authorized to have Mr. Tennant sign the agreement and give assur- ance that he will carry out the proper procedures in operat- ing the dump area. The agreement was to be signed as of last Friday. happenings... | IT LOOKS, SMELLS AND FEELS LIKE RAIN-But it never rains or almost never. The storms always seem to pass to the north or to the south. As a result there has been a big demand on the Orono Water system of late which had the Orono manager quite concerned last week when in 24 hours a total of 104,000 gallons of water was used. Also from the period of 5 p.m. to il a.m. the following day a sum of 73,000 gallons was used indicating that garden hoses must have been left on all night in many cases. This use of water reduces the fire protection efficiency in Orono as the water level lowers in the standpipe reducing pressure and storage capacity. A WEEK-END PACKED WITH ENTERTAINMENT-For those who enjoy plenty of action this holiday week-end has it all, both in Orono and Newcastle. Of course in Orono its the Steam and Antique show at the fair grounds from Saturday to Sunday inclusive. In Newcastle its the Civic Holiday Celebrations starting Friday evening and continuing into Sunday. Refer to advertisements for further details. WHATS FIVE MILLION DOLLARS-Last week in outlining the cost of the various power line costs from A to B and C it was noted by one Hydro official that the difference was only five million dollars and that this differnce would have very little bearing on the decision by hydro in making their choice of the route that the power line is to follow.
